  • Don't forget to keep sending emails.  This is a slightly more personalized one I sent to both NY Senators:

    Dear Senator Gillibrand,

I am writing to express my condemnation of the Protect IP Act currently before the Senate.  Like its counterpart in the House, it is nothing more than a blunt instrument in you would be putting into the hands of media companies  that do not need your help aggressively pursuing their copyright claims.  Most troubling about the Protect IP Act is that it does not include any fair-use or safe-harbor clauses, which will allow any media company with a lawyer to effectively shut down a website without cause and without punishment for frivolous claims.

Furthermore, the provision in the bill that would force ISPs to block so-called "rogue sites" is a blatant precursor to the oppressive censorship practiced by the Chinese regime, as well as other, less legitimate regimes, especially given that the list of rogue sites would be at least partially written by the same media companies that will exploit this bill.

I urge you to vote against Protect IP.  Your constituents are counting on you to see this bill as the flawed corporate power-grab that it is.
  • I think we should explain the senator in simple words, not involving the internet.

If we can have a parallel of this bill in real life, that would be  "if somebody is going to curse/litter or doing something illegal in the subway, this bill will shut down the whole subway system.. LOL.. don't they see it?
  • I called again, since the phrase "same amount of people who supports that bill are calling"  did really frustrate to me. I asked the guy from the office to give me at least 2 points for that bill of people who are calling to support it, and he couldn't make one. lol..

After I held him on the phone for 10 minutes, telling him that this is IMPOSSIBLE that he doesn't know any of the points of people that supports the bill (even thought when I started telling him about my point "Netflix streaming, bla bla bla", he said that he know about it, and lots of people calling with the same point) he couldn't recollect even single point of people FOR the bill.

Another 10 minutes later he came up with the point, LOL.. "the people think that the internet is too open. children younger the 18 can go on the porn site", I told him that the bill has nothing to do with it, and I got no reply back. LOL

At the end of the conversation he offered to hold on the phone, and when next person that supports the bill will call, he will connect me with him and I can ask him the point myself.

    - 29 minutes later - got disconnected.
    - Called back
    - 17 minutes later the guy picked up and told me "nobody so far, would like continue to wait?"
    - 15 minutes later the guy picked up the phone and said "we just received a memo from our directors that Senator met with a lot of different people and he aware of everybody concerns, and he might adjust the bill"
    - 3 minutes later guy picked up "Please hold, I will transfer you our office in Washington"

Then I Spoke with a nice young women, I asked her if she knows any points of people who are "calling to support" the bill, and she replied to me "I only got calls from people that oppose the bill, not a single "supporter". WTF?

That is just pissing me off, that there is no reason in HELL that any regular person will support censorship the Internet..

    I'm tired
  • I called Gilibrand and was told my concerns would be passed along. No answer at Schumer's office but will keep trying.
  • @Bellorusha I like your analogy. I am going to use it.
  • @sone518 - Thanks. I'm an Albany resident as well and remember Schumer stopping my college graduation @ UAlbany, mid-ceremony to come in and make his comments and immediately leave. Beyond how insincere they were - what's most baffling is how much he touched on the emergence of NY as a Tech Giant - and how it is so important that we promote legislation that helps technology flourish. Foot - in - mouth.

Anyway - if someone secures a meeting with Ms. Gillibrand or Mr. Schumer, I would love to attend and be kept in the loop. I'm sure there are a lot of folks who are on the same page and obviously the more people the more of an impact and statement we can make.

Thanks again to all of you. I too have sent my e-mails and look forward to how my elected officials once again dance around the requests of the constituents they represent.
  • This is s violation of constitution, is it not? Piracy is not stealing, it was bought at one point, COPIED from something someone PAID for, and distributed. No way this will pass there's no good reason to.
  • phnx78--the reason it has a good chance of being passed is due to the overwhelming corruption of our governing body.
I'm not conspiracy theorist/activist et al, but with the amount of opposition to these bills across all spectrums of our society...the fact that there is still a lot of support from our congress for these bills just shows you that our wishes and needs are not being considered.

when laws are written by and for (yes, this law had "help" being written by) media companies...it's time for all of us to stand up to the people oppressing us. in this case, it's our elected leaders.

it should be clear to everyone that the general population's best interests are no longer a reason to legislate.

I for one will do my best to go to this meeting on the 13th.

phnx78, if you're in NYC here are the details which someone posted previously:

    * i'm not sure if all attendees need to call the # above to schedule an invitation, or if all are welcome but i'll be calling tomorrow to verify.

  • guttermanster  -- schumer is the lowest common denominator of elected officials. he's on the news here once a week with his jaws flapping about the newest thing that someone is up in arms about. he's a parasite who enjoys being "important".
  • Hi People, Read this!  http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/unless-facebook-google-blackout-sopa-will-succeed-heres-what-you-can-do/66875

@wileyj ~ Friday's event does not require an RSVP, just show up.
  • @Bellorusha - that's truly amazing work: THANK YOU. Calling staffers and making it as clear as possible to them just how strong your position is (both in terms of how you feel about it, and in terms of the technical evidence behind it) is almost as good as coming into an office in person, so if you aren't able to make physical meetings, please at least give your local office a call.
  • E-mail sent I'm surprised there's only two pages of comments. Guess people like to be told what to do. Now I wait also someone should start a event group on Facebook when they get a meeting. I'll be there.
  • @sallie Just made a facebook event for your meeting tomorrow: http://www.facebook.com/events/361900267157119/ Everybody else, forward to anyone who you think would like to attend!
  • I'll most probably attend too. Been following this thread and other groups for a few weeks, and been interested in protecting the Domain Name System's integrity (particularly DNSSEC) ever since I heard about SOPA a few months ago.

Hope to see you and other supporters tonight! Thanks for organizing the meeting!
  • @Sallie - thanks for the confirm!
I'll do my best to make it there, so hopefully I'll be seeing you all tonight.

Do we have any specific talking points for everyone to hammer schumer on?
  • If Senator Schumer does not schedule a meeting, this is a good indication that he has already made up his mind.

We need to let Senator Schumer know that by ignoring us and co-sponsoring a unpopular bill, he will be facing the wrath of voters in the next election.  Self preservation is the only thing that motivates some Polititions.

I am not against companies wanting to protect their intellectual property, but this bill goes way too far and gives too much power to the government to "decide" which sites are acceptable for its citizens to access.  Censorship is a slippery slope which can quickly change from banning sites which pirate intellectual property to banning sites which present "ideas" that the goverment doesn't like.

  • Called Chuck Schumer's office in DC and was told to email: abbie_sorrendino@schumer.senate.gov to request a meeting. no answer at Sen. Gillibrand's office
  • From StopSOPA-HQ @sallie Just made a facebook event for your meeting tomorrow:http://www.facebook.com/events/361900267157119/ Everybody else, forward to anyone who you think would like to attend!
  • TONIGHT!!!!

NYC Meeting this Friday, Jan. 13th
    8PM till 9
    at 244 W. 54th St. 10th Fl., Studio 2

Organize to meet with Senators Schumer and Gilibrand (co-sponsors of PIPA) Please contact their offices to arrange meeting, as will I. Here is the Capital Hill Switchboard number: 202-224-3121. Scheduling requests in NYC are handled through their Washington offices. SEE YOU THIS FRIDAY THE 13th AT 8PM!!!
  • @Sallie - If Schumer and Gilibrand won't take your meeting requests, go ahead and organize an impromptu meeting. Get a lot of people together, visit their offices on any week-day afternoon, tell them that you tried scheduling meetings and that you'd now like to voice your concerns about the bill in person. Make sure the staffer you talk to takes everyone's name and address (to show that you are all indeed constituents) and bring some informative literature (this can be found on our WordPress, check the top right of this page for the link) to leave with the staffer. However if you're going to do this, you need to be CALM. Just large orderly group essentially saying "You wouldn't meet with us, so now we're meeting with you".

Also, you guys might want to do this on a day other than the 18th. New York Tech Meetup is planning a major protest outside (and maybe inside) the Senator's offices: http://nytm.org/sos/

Lastly, if any of your attendees know people in the Occupy organization, you might want to get their back-up. Sites like Twitter and Tumblr have been instrumental to their success and they probably wouldn't hesitate to back you guys up.

Good luck with the meeting tonight!

  • I spoke to Joel. (I think) He said that Senator Schumer was meeting with Google during the week because them and Yahoo and other small business expressed concerned about it. Why not constituents? Didn't have a chance to ask more questions. He said okay I will pass your message to Senator Schumer. He just sounded cavalier, very polite tough. More calls Please!!!

  • @Sallie @JanusCoda @Bellorusha - THESE ARE NOT ISOLATED INCIDENTS - Schumer's office is being EXTREMELY rude to constituents. And apparently, the Senator literally supports Internet censorship: http://amandapeyton.com/blog/2012/01/my-call-to-senator-schumers-office-on-pipa-its-so-much-worse-than-i-thought/
  • You're not referring to my dear, sweet, camera-shy Uppy Chucky Schumer with the overly Botoxed forehead that makes him appropriately look like Bojo the Clown with a rhythm section of a stereotypical white boy who can't jump? Shirley, you jest!

  • @Sallie For those of us who couldn't make it to your meeting today, let us know how it went!

To everyone -- let's also show up to the senator's offices on the 18th:

  • I am On board ..  What Next !!  OMG
  • Just got this email from Senator Schumer:

    "Dear Friend:
Thank you for contacting us to express your  concern on S.968, the Protect IP Act.

Senator Schumer has met with people from many parts of the internet community — from users to start-ups to big internet firms like Google, Facebook, and Yahoo — to hear out their issues and to better understand their concerns regarding this proposed legislation. Many have conveyed to us their legitimate concern regarding the need to maintain a vibrant and innovative online environment, and we are sensitive to this concern.  The senator, and his staff, will continue this conversation with the online community with the hope that the issues raised can be positively addressed within the legislative process.

You should also know that Senator Schumer, who led the charge against the assault on net neutrality and has financed broadband expansion in rural and urban areas, is completely opposed to internet censorship. The PROTECT IP Act seeks to addresses the very real problem of intellectual property theft online and copyright infringement, but it must avoid unintended consequences, and must also contain sufficient due process protections to ensure that legal activity over the internet is not disrupted.
Thanks again for contacting us on this matter. Please be assured that we will stay in close contact with members and representatives of the online community as the process unfolds.

    Sincerely,

    Charles E. Schumer
    United States Senator"
  • MUST SEE RIGHT NOW!image
  • is there a way to give electronic vote?
  • I was just wondering if you had to time to meet with me so that I could give you my opinion on how passing SOPA is going to stop the great internet revolution and restrict the great freedoms that we were all born entitled too. I believe that in 100 years this time period will be looked at the same way the "Great Awakenings" were looked at in American history.
  • SOPA/PIPA cheat sheet, useful as reference or to pass on to the uninformed on Jan 18th.

    Included are
    * links to limited, but informative coverage in the media
    * links to written coverage of SOPA & PIPA (two may be offline today)
    * key points highlighting threats and collateral damage that SOPA & PIPA present
  • Get ready for tomorrow's big NY protest rally: http://www.meetup.com/ny-tech/events/47879702/ Please get out there and show your Senators and the world just how unacceptable PIPA/SOPA really are.

@Sallie Any updates on how Friday's meeting went?
  • The plan:
    https://www.facebook.com/pages/World-against-SOPA/304313362953003?sk=info

    first step:

1._ No subscriber to this group will ever buy a under copyright item
2._ No subscriber to this group will ever go to a cinema
3._ No subscriber to this group will ever buy film on pay tv
4._ No subscriber to this group will ever buy a book (paper or e-book)
5._ No subscriber to this group will ever buy a news paper
6._ No subscriber to this group will ever buy a magazine of any kind
7._ No subscriber to this group will ever buy a CD
8._ No subscriber to this group will ever buy a DVD
  • @mdr3d - I think that is indeed the approach we have to take. We need to boycott assholes movie companies and show them real drop in profit.
  • The NY Tech Meetup anti-PIPA rally seems to have been a wild success, with over 1,600 attendees. Congrats and thanks to all those who attended, and helped make this huge event happen!

To all: keep up the good work! We've had a huge impact over the past 24 hours, and we need to use that momentum to reach those Senators (like Schumer) who aren't responding to their constituents' concerns. Call, email, fax, and (optimally) go to your Senators' local offices and ask for meetings and express your concerns, preferably under the banner of "New York for Internet Freedom." That'll let the Senators' staffs know that there are a lot of you out there, that you're all working together, and that they therefore cannot possibly hope to ignore you. Stay strong out there - we're making progress!
  • I for one, will ensure EVERY VOTER knows who backed this bill when it comes time to give my vote! THIS WILL COST YOU GILLIBRAND, may I suggest whoever you took money from to support this garbage legislation, you give it back! You are SUPPOSED to be FOR THE PEOPLE! This SENATOR needs to be kept AWAY from the white house! NO FUTURE FOR SOPA BACKING REPRESENTATIVES of the PEOPLE...ermm or at least that is what they are called!
  • @Bellorusha I like your analogy. I am going to use it.  (same here gave credit on my wall to you :D)
  • I have phoned, faxed and e-mailed both Senators Schumer and Gillibrand indicating my immense displeasure with their support of SOPA/PIPA.  I have not, however, contributed to their campaign coffers with a major $$$ contribution as big media companies have  Remember Senator Schumer has in the past couple years taken over 3 million $$$ in contributions (bribes?) from big media companies as they attempt to buy his influence and vote.  Senator Gillibrand who has taken in substantially less, (in the hundreds of thousands of $$$) also still remains unswayed a co-sponsor of PIPA.  This should tell you something about how they feel regarding their representation of "The People" vs Big Business.  Shameful... and sad.

Elected officials, both Senators above included, know voters have *** very short*** memories and by the time they run for re-election this will all but be forgotten.  Don't let this happen.  If you are not already... REGISTER TO VOTE.  If you do not, "your" Internet will eventually will be controlled by big media (movie-music-telecommunications companies).  This will be a tragedy for this nation (and the Internet) if it is ever allowed to happen.  This is JUST THE BEGINNING of a very big fight.  Make sure your voice is heard in Washington and at your local Senator/Congressman's office.  Call, write, fax, e-mail.  Protest...and make your voice heard...and have your friends do the same.  The Internet will be a better place for your efforts.
  • Just mailed mine and my wife's voting registration form. The election is in this September.

Dear Schumer, this will be forgotten.
  • 1/20/12 --  From the Wall Street Journal..  Senator Reid -  A PIPA supporter...and one of the forces in the "evil empire" starts to feel your heat...  Go ahead...fan the flames... and
    check it out...

  • We MUST strike back and Here is how.

We need to start a movement "People against Hollywood!"

We make a Facebook page, or a little site, where we pick the biggest movie that are coming out in the next couple of month, and people that will join that movement will Pledge that they are not going to see that movie (at least in the movie theater) and we'll do that every couple of month. the movie can be decided by the pool.

The biggest movies are opening with $40-$90 millions in the first weekend - with the movement growing, it will be more and more noticeable money drop to the evil Hollywood companies. And they WILL HAVE to start watching how they tread regular people.

Movies companies got OUT OF CONTROL. Now we know that they even buying US Senators. Nothing can stop them.

The only thing we have against them are us, the people.
