Utah for Internet Freedom: YOU DID IT!!! Sen. Lee and Hatch to vote "no"!!!

Top Priority for UT: Go Meet with Senator Lee!

  • On Jan 23rd at 1pm, thanks to @EatenByAGrue, there will be a meeting with Senator Lee, who has no stance on PIPA yet. Please join the briefing call on Monday and Wednesdays at 12pm EST to catch up and ask questions. Organize to be there below!

Be polite and professional, and request a meeting on behalf of Utah for Internet Freedom (the folks in this forum) to discuss the PROTECT IP Act and SOPA.  Make it clear that you want to meet with the Senator during the January recess, and that you'll be bringing others from your group.  Have your calendar open when you call, so you can pick a time that works for you.  When finished, post a report-back.

For example: "Hi, my name is ________, I'm with Utah for Internet freedom, and I'm calling to request a meeting with Senator _______ during the January recess.  The PROTECT IP vote is happening on January 24th, and I wanted the Senator to understand my concerns before the vote happens."

IMPORTANT: If you do get a meeting, post another message. That way others can join you in your meeting.  If there's any other specific information we should include in this post, message us and we can add it.

  • I have requested a meeting through both the website, as well as the email address provided for Senator Lee. Unfortunately, Senator Hatch's request a meeting form is currently down.
  • Landon if you get a chance to meet with Sentor lee let me know i would like to go with you and help stop this.  I also emailed Senator Hatch regarding this bill.  I will email him back my concerns and let him know that would like to meet with him before this bill goes to vote.  I will let you know.

  • Also willing to come to a meeting with Senator's Lee and Hatch.
  • Please let me know if anyone sets up a meeting; I would like to go to, but I really don't know what I would say. Any advice?
  • Landon, please email me if you find anything out. I would be more than willing to go and talk to both senators with anyone who would like to join. My email is philmanwill@gmail.com
  • I just responded to an email to Senator Hatch regarding this requesting to have a meeting.  If i hear anything back i will let this group know.  Anyone would be welcome to come with me if they would like. That is if he gives me an opportunity to talk to him.
  • Let me know if you guys hear anything. Post on my wall I would love to come to the meeting if you get one
  • You guys are doing awesome work! There is a high likelihood that the Senator might ask you to meet with his aides, which is not a bad thing. Aides report to the Senators, you've just got to make it apparent to the Aide that the senator voting 'yes' on PIPA would be a bad thing.
  • Requested a mtg with Sen. Lee as well with a couple of friends.  Mtg will hopefully be saturday the 21st, I'll post here if I catch word.  If not both senators can expect several emails from us.
  • I'd really like to know if you all have a meeting - I think the more people we have there or more people with letters you can take with you, the better.
  • Its already been censored for years, wake up wankers.,

  • I will go to a meeting when you get one set.

I too very much want to go to any meetings if they are able to be set - I imagine that a unified front of concerned citizens could go a long way.
I'll be emailing the Senators for the purposes of setting up meetings on my own, and of course I'll post anything that develops here.
Please please please, if anyone does get a meeting arranged, do post it here so we can all be involved (and thank you in advance for whatever extra work you did to secure said meeting)!
  • I just got a meeting invite with Senator Lee. January 16, 1pm. His office said that there'll be a phone number available for calling in to the meeting if you can't be there in person.
  • Get me at mendokuse.maguro@gmail.com!
  • Eaten send me the info at nobody0212@gmail.com i would like to come along.   Can you meet up before so we look organized before we go?
  • @EatenByAGrue  this is awesome. do you want to get on the phone to confirm you will be there and others can join you? Also, everyone there is a briefing call on Mon and Wed at 12pm est as can be seen in the sidebar on this site. It's a chance to ask questions and get prepared. Please confirm here if you are going also!

OK, we have a couple of updates.

First, a coworker received an email earlier informing him of the meeting at 1pm on Jan. 16 at Senator Lee's office in the Wallace F. Bennett federal building or via phone at 308-344-6400, access code 223966#. Also, it said that Bill Lee, the Deputy State Director would be conducting the meeting.

And second: I just received a call informing me that, due to the 16th being MLK, the meeting has been pushed back to the 23rd at 1pm.
  • In regards to the meeting being pushed back (I was also issued an invite to this meeting from an intern's email address), isn't the 23rd at 1pm a bit late?  From certain sources I'm seeing that cloture will start the 23rd, and PIPA can possibly end by the 24th if they get a 3/5ths vote for yes.  We need to see about bringing the meeting a bit closer than the 23rd, or it will not be helpful for deterring PIPA.

SOPA is important, but it's in the House, not the Senate.

  • The link you have posted to "fill out the form to meet with Senator Hatch" is incomplete and gets an error.  The complete working link is  Fill out this form to meet with Senator Hatch, a co-sponsor of PIPA -- he needs attention too!
  • hello, my name is Quinn Kearsley, and i would like to come to the meeting but i cant make it because im in afghanistan, if some one could let me know who to send an email to (im going to write a letter to Mr lee.) i would like to send the letter to one of you to hand to Mr. Lee when you guys have the meeting. i figure he might take a second thought to this if some one from utah in the military takes his time to write against this bill, it might help, it might not. just let me know. thanks
  • @EatenByAGrue can you call and ask if there's any possibility of moving the meeting sooner? The 23rd is pretty close to the vote. But if that's all they offer, take it. Just don't stop calling and writing and dropping by your local offices in the meantime!
  • From Mike Lee on his FB page:

PIPA has yet to make it to the Senate floor. When the bill went through the Judiciary Committee (on which I sit), I made clear that, if it reached the floor it in its current form, I could not support it. PIPA is a moving target at this point because some of the bill's supporters, recognizing that many Americans are concerned with some of its provisions, are considering making adjustments to alleviate those concerns. My staff and I are working with the bill's sponsors to encourage them to make the necessary changes. Unless those changes are made, I will vote against PIPA..
  • @JohnTE, can you post a link please?
  • @landon @brian @ainsworth @diesel @phil @LSDan @scott @digiscrap101 @riffman101 @kidglitz @seafarer @eatenbyagrue @libryder @ken @Quinnkearsley @JohnTW - !!!! YOU GUYS DID IT !!!!

Today (1/13) Senators Hatch and Lee signed a letter saying they will not support PIPA any more: http://www.ce.org/PDF/Letter-to-Majority-Leader-Reid.pdf

UTAH FOR INTERNET FREEDOM DID IT!!!
  • @eatenbyagrue - We would recommend you still attend your scheduled meeting. Please tell Senator Lee's staff that you appreciate his committed opposition and that you will be voting for him in the coming election, then ask how you can help the Senator defeat PIPA.
  • @StopSOPA-HQ, that's fantastic.

    The letter is co-signed by:

    Chuck Grassley, R-IA
    Orrin Hatch, R-UT
    Jeff Sessions, R-AL
    John Cornyn, R-TX
    Mike Lee, R-UT
    Tom Coburn, R-OK
  • Senator Hatch is apparently holding a Town Hall meeting on January 18th at 6pm at the Veterans Memorial Bldg. 400 N. Main, Spanish Fork, UT. They say you should RSVP to Matt at matthew@hatchforsenate.com or 801.708.2321.

I know this is kind of late news, but it would probably help to reinforce our opposition to SOPA and Protect IP if someone that represents us shows up with talking points concerning the bills - I'm not entirely sure of the format of the meeting, but I imagine since it is a town hall, constituents will be able to voice concerns.
  • @StopSOPA-HQ: (re: Utah win on SOPA) Yay! (re: 23rd meeting) As for pushing to have my meeting earlier, the problem is that it does not appear to really be "my" meeting. A coworker got an email, hours after my phone call, informing him of the same meeting place and time.
