TODAYS NEWS: (Things are getting worse)The Department of Homeland has been operating a "Social Networking/Media Capability" program to monitor the top blogs, forums and social networks online for at least the past 18 months. Based on a privacy compliance review from last November recently obtained by Reuters, the purpose of the project is to "collect information used in providing situational awareness and establishing a common operating picture." Whatever that means. Either way, the list of sites reported by Reuters reveals in a Wednesday afternoon exclusive is pretty intriguing:Social NetworksFacebookTwitterMyspaceBlogs

  • Hey Folks-
It looks like the Senators are not budging in CA to set up a meeting with us.  Why don't we plan a date just to show up at their offices anyways?  It's the 11th, we've got 13 days left.  I'm going to the LA office on the 19th on Thursday in the morning just to talk to the Senators staff and tell them know about my concern over this bill.  I wish I could do the 16th on Monday, but I've got stuff going on...  The 17th in the morning I could possibly go on that day as well...

C'MON PEOPLE, just go to the office and bombard them w/our concern over this darn bill!  Internet requests are bouncing off the kevlar and we NEED to be more proactive than this!!!
  • If they're co-sponsors it's going to be very difficult to persuade them, but STRENGTH in #s, we must STOP this bill!!!!
  • I want to be in with the LA group- Kaycee Wysaski
  • edited January 2012
Someone on Reddit said that Jon Stewart will mention Sopa tonight.
  • We need to get the media involved. Going to their office without that will only get the cops.
  • I'm with darshun any of those days is fine by me
  • I want to meet in the bay area.
  • just sent a request from the modesto area.
  • I sent a request for a meeting in LA.  We'll see how it goes...

darshun, I will go with you on Thursday.  You can contact me at gdolley [at] arpnetworks.com.
  • I requested a meeting in Fresno. Anyone else in the Central Valley want to join me? I requested the 17th.

@darshun @Shermanus Declaring your own impromptu "meeting" is an EXCELLENT idea - and as long as you're polite and respectful, you shouldn't have to worry about anything.
In fact, one of the major take-aways from the briefing call with Public Knowledge earlier today was that you don't have to set up a formal meeting to come in and talk to someone in a Senator's local office - you can and should just show up!

Once you all decide on a time, post it up here, and we'll create a facebook event on the fftp main page for it.
  • Willing to attend any SF Bay Area meeting. We need the SOBs sponsoring this bill out of power NOW, by any means necessary!!!!
  •    I DONT FEEL GOOD ABOUT ANY OF THIS.YOU CAN ASK THE SENATORS TO DO WHAT IS RITE BUT THEY ARE ALL THE SAME.THE DEMS AND THE REPUBS ARE ALL IN THE SAME BED.THE GOVERMENT IS THE LOWEST FORM OF LIFE AND ARE GREEDY LIEING SCUM.IF THEY WANT THIS THEY WILL PASS IT.I WOULDN'T WANT A MEETING WITH EITHER ONE OF THESE PEOPLE BECAUSE I COULDN'T KEEP FROM THROWING UP JUST LOOKING AT THEM.THESE TWO WOWMEN ARE TWO OF THE WORST.
  • San Diego meetings? Let me know
  • Hey, Got this back from Boxer scheduling:

    Good Morning Jonathan,

Thank you for submitting a request to meet with Senator Barbara Boxer.
In order to process your request please submit the following
    information:

-where are you requesting to meet, Washington D.C. or California-if you are requesting a meeting in CA please specify the city

-please provide a phone number where we can contact you

Once I receive this information  can go ahead and process your request.  Thank you.

I'm in LA/Long Beach. Anyone around that area want to come if I can get a meet? I'd like some back up, ha ha.
  • @escalatoraccident - not only do you have plenty of people in this forum to back you up, we think that Reddit is going to bring reinforcements soon! Go ahead and schedule the meeting, then we will help you find allies to go with you!
  • Just submitted request for San Jose.  If San Francisco happens, I may try to come.
  • Meeting requested in San Diego ...
  • Hopefully Senators Feinstein and Boxer will begin representing their constituency or at least listening to their opinions before voting.
  • I wish I could join you in this part of the fight unfortunatly I think I will just weaken the cause if the Senators see a under voting age kid there :P. I wish I was 3 years older. Anyway I will be praying and rooting for everyone who is going to be there. FOR INTERNET FREEDOM!
  • Sent a request for meeting on the 01/12 (Santa Barbara area), will keep you updated.
  • Hello,

Student from UC San Diego here, willing to attend any meetings in southern California.

    Will continue checking this.
  • Great, sent an email to Senator Boxer requesting a meeting.

  • @
escalatoraccident I'm in Southern California and I'll go with you. Just say when and where.
  • edited January 2012
escalatoraccident - I'm in Huntington Beach, and I will gladly support this meeting by taking some time off work to attend. Please keep us up to date!

I encourage everyone to brush up on the very basics of the law - anger alone won't get anywhere, but the point is, this law is so unreasonable that the average American when confronted with the facts, has to agree it's simply terrible legislation that doesn't benefit the citizens.  And it's not just about the meeting with the Senator - it's the staff, all the other citizens in the area, and especially our ability to voice concerns in a peaceful, dispassionate way, to any media that might show up for interviews, that will convince other people (who don't already agree) to listen to you/us.
  • Sent request to meet Sen Feinstein in SFO.
  • I requested a meeting as well
  • I wrote an email to both Boxer and Feingold asking for a public forum to discuss this law.

I also told them how badly it would hurt my web development business of ~25 staff members.

I will be writing my Representative soon.

I shared this site on Facebook and Twitter.

Keep up the good work everyone!
  • Scheduled a request for a STOP SOPA meeting in Contra Costa County!
  • How about the State Capitol, Sacramento? I'm here to represent.
  • Sent a request for LA/OC.
  • I'm in for LA meeting when it happens!
  • If a large meeting is set up, please provide contact details on this board. I have friends who write for the New York Times and one who works for PBSNewsHour. It would be interested if there could be some press at the meeting.
  • Who is up for rolling unannounced office visits to Sen Boxer's Los Angeles office. I'm thinking perhaps a group of 4 to 5 people every hour on the hour for Jan 17-24 rolling unannounced office visits. Who's up? I could set up a public google calendar for scheduling.

    /Sharon

  • @smlake - If Feinstein and Boxer aren't meeting with you, than it's indeed time to meet with them! Make sure any groups you organize are calm and polite and make it explicitly clear that they tried meeting with the Senator's staff multiple times. You might want to consider a larger action on the 18th, which co-incides with Reddit's planned blackout.
  • I wanted to post up the response I received, but, apparently comments here are limited to 160 characters ... that's rather counter-productive to being communicative ... any chance of having that limiter removed?
  • @10sexapples What? did you register through Twitter??? Lots of people have posted comments longer than 160 characters, including yourself.
  • Response:

Thank you for contacting our office to arrange a meeting with Senator Feinstein to discuss the PROTECT IP Act
Unfortunately, Senator Feinstein has received more than 200 individual
requests to meet on this bill.  She is travelling around California and
it is difficult for her to accommodate every request.

However, Senator Feinstein understands your concerns regarding the PROTECT IP Act
She is working with members of Congress and representatives from the
technology industry to resolve some of the issues you have raised and
hopes a package of changes will be incorporated into the legislation
that will address your views to the greatest degree possible.

    Thanks very much,

  • Stop SOPA/PIPA Los Angeles Action.

Since our California Senators are not responding to scheduled meeting requests, this calendar is to organize a rolling meeting action for unannounced visits at their Los Angeles offices on the hour every hour to express SOPA/PIPA concerns.

Number(s) in parentheses indicates how many people have said they will be attending during that time slot. The name and email address will be included as part of the time slot description.

I'm not sure how to make editing for a Google calendar public, so if you would like to be included, please email s (DOT) michelle (DOT) lake (AT) gmail (DOT) com with your name, email address, the Senator's office you will be visiting, and the time.

I'm sure that this could be more organized, but I'm assuming this is a start ... feel free to improve the process, etc. as needed.

Note that for in office visits you will need to be polite and dress appropriately.

The scheduling calendar can be found at:

I'll see if I get a real date from the Boxer staff.
  • @smlake - thank you for spearheading this, this is AWESOME. We will edit the first page to include this.

Sent the following email (which others are more than welcome to copy!) to scheduling@boxer.senate.gov at 1:13pm today Friday 13th of January:

    Hello,

My name is Adam Albonni and I am a 24yr old resident of North Tustin, Ca. The purpose of my email is twofold:

First, I would like to express my serious concern over Senate bill S 968, the 'Protect IP Act'. This bill will cause grave amounts of damage to online development and innovation, and, simultaneously, actually does a very poor job at protecting IP. Additionally, it addresses a fundamental issue moving forward, one that i agree needs to be discussed. Therefore, it would be premature and a poor fulfillment of your duties as representing your constituents by voting to pass this bill on the 24th of this month, January.

Secondly, and as a result of my first reason for opposing this Bill, I ask that both you, AND Senator Feinstein coordinate a large and public hearing somewhere in the state of California to allow YOUR people to express their positions on this topic. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY AND DUTY! Furthermore, I urge you to NOT think it safe to play a role in this arrogant attempt at further unconstitutional social control and censorship. I am sure, Barbara, that you are aware of the proceedings taking place across our great nation...and, indeed, across our planet. For once, I would hope to see a politician do what they know to be RIGHT, not advantageous. Perhaps, you can act from your gut on this one...rather than the pocket of yours that's padded with nearly 1 Million dollars from Hollywood contributions in this 2012 campaign cycle alone. Prove us all wrong, Senator Boxer. You and your team will be rewarded for it.

    Thank you

Received the following reply at 1:20pm same day:

    To which I responded:

    Alicia,

Thank you for a prompt response.

Cell: (i'll leave that out) :)
Location: Meetings in Orange, LA, SD, or Riverside counties in California will all be strongly attended.

    Thank you, Alicia.

    Adam

I was not expecting a personal response, but I got it. I suggest people just copy my letter, add your own spin to it...AND SEND THEM OUT EN MASSE!!!

Any confirmations on scheduled meeting times will be shared, please do as well.

    Adam

  • Emailed the scheduling email. Hoping to get her to back down from PIPA. Anyone interested in visiting her office?
