I have a question to ask? Would I be able to get into the meeting with the Senator/staff if I'm 17?
  • @phcox The only confirmed meeting we have at this point is being coordinated by @wehopkins - so try getting in touch over email (click on the user nametag, which will take you to the profile)
@Josh You have no less of a right to speak about issues you care about just because you happen to be under 18. If you have something to say (politely, of course), go for it.
  • @wehopkins We just set up a fftf facebook event to help ensure that you fill all seven slots: http://www.facebook.com/events/100884633367369. Let us know if you want any of the wording changed, and if/when you want it taken down, if all the slots get filled up.

Most important: thanks for stepping up and taking the initiative on this.
  • I got a letter back from Kay Hagan's office stating hedge was proud to co-sponsor the bill. I want to help an I'm in Raleigh.
  • Please pardon my autocorrect.
  • The meeting on Wednesday has been pushed up to 11am. I will still be attending, but will verify this works for previously confirmed attendees.
  • @wehopkins I just changed my work schedule to have Wednesday free. I'd like to join you at the meeting, if you still have a spot.

    Hi all,

just spoke to the office via email to one of the greensboro liaisons.

Pretty much he told me to come up with a date and he will be more than happy to talk and brief Hagan on what we say.

Only problem is im not 100% educated on this bill...I'll probably need some help as im still in High School and don't have time right now to look thoroughly look into this bill (exam week)

So here I am from the Greensboro area needing some help...If you want to go to the meeting in GSO, please let me know.

  • @ttam110 if you look at the yellow box next to your post, you'll find a link to our WordPress where we have some .pdfs informing you about the bill. Also, if you manage to have a lunch period at 12 noon on either Monday or Wed, we will be having a 15-30 minute briefing call with Public Knowledge's Legislative Coordinator!
  • I received a reply from Senator Hagan and she said she was voting yes for the SOPA bill.

The only way we will effectively change Hagans position, is to influence her campaign financiers into pulling support.  As I don't see us putting any pressure on any of these organizations or the PAC's that made the contributions:

    http://www.opensecrets.org/politicians/contrib.php?cycle=2012&cid=N00029617&type=I&newmem=N

We will have to focus more on Burr.
  • I am not nearly as eloquent as some but I sent my thoughts via email to Emily's List (one of Hagans top contributors)  Again wording etc just ignore, but it gets the point across.

I am writing you today as a concerned parent in North Carolina.  I understand that you are one of the top supporters of Senator Kay Hagan here in North Carolina.  Beyond the pro-life campaign that you support, your other key points focuses on american education.  Right now senator Hagan is supporting a bill that would block sites based on internet piracy and while this does not sound like a bad thing, it is.  This bill is too broadly written and would allow the US government the ability to block websites at their will.  My child uses the internet for research for her school DAILY.  One of the leading sources is Wikipedia.  One normally does not put Wikipedia and piracy in the same sentence, but consider this, if there are any links that could possibly be construed as "piracy links" by any given group and reported; then Wikipedia could essentially be banned to access!  This is only the tip of the iceberg and plenty more information about this bill can be found.  I urge you to speak to senator Hagan about this matter and rethink your position for your financial contributions to her campaign.  If she votes for this bill it will be another crushing blow not only to american freedom and speech but to further diminish outside influence in american education.
  • Since Ms Hagan is a Democrat and there for supposed to support the "oppressed" I sent this:

"I am horrified to learn that Ms Hagan is not only supporting a bill limiting free speech but is actually SPONSORING the bill!  Since when did the USA decide that Corporations had more rights than the individual?  Since when did the USA decide that Corporations had the right to take the law into their own hands and CRUSH individuals that displeased them?  As a Democrat I thought you, Ms Hagan, would be on the side FOR freedom of speech especially the freedom of speech of the little guy.  Instead you are on the side of the large corporations. Shame on you!"

I figure letting her know she is seen as siding with the corporations agains the rest of us maybe the only way to get through to her.

  • Lamar Smith is the US Representative behind SOPA.

His website does not allow other US citizens, not from Texas to contact him easily.

Our best method for contacting Congress is by FAX not phone or e-mail.  According to something I read a few years ago, all FAXes must be be saved where as e-mails and phone messages are easily tossed....

Faxes also allow the sending of group letters with real signatures vs online "petitions"

Public outrage managed to kill "Real ID" let us do the same with this.

Also support.: Recall the Rogues ~ http://
    www.recalltherogues.org/

North Carolina only allows the recall of some local officials per a 2011 law ~ http://www.recalltherogues.org/states/north-carolina.html#news

It is a start but we really need the ability to yank the chain on our representatives when they turn traitor.
  • I will be talking to the Greensboro liaison hopefully this Friday.
  • In the meantime, please Call 336-333-5311 and voice your concerns!!

I've requested meetings with both Burr and Hagan. I'm also in the Facebook group for the meeting tomorrow (11:00AM in Charlotte). I haven't decided if I can go, as I will have to skip four college classes. However, I wanted to point this out:

Senator Hagan will be in Asheboro to host "Conversations with Kay." Constituents can come meet with Hagan to talk about their concerns from 3-4 p.m. Hagan's constituent services staff will be on site from 2:30-4:30 p.m. to help people navigate issues with federal agencies, such as the VA, IRS or Social Security Administration.

    Included are
    * links to limited, but informative coverage in the media
    * links to written coverage of SOPA & PIPA (two may be offline today)
    * key points highlighting threats and collateral damage that SOPA & PIPA present
  • @wehopkins and all others meeting today: Good luck, and please post back to let us know how the meeting goes!
  • Just got off the phone with Hagan's office and got a spiel about how the bill protects the motion picture industry that has a presence in N.C.  Then they just basically told me that this was her position and thanks for the call....
they were not even going to ask my name or anything else until I asked about it.. and then all he wanted was my name and zip code!  He acted as though I was annoying him with my complaint about her support.. It was like he was reading a scripted message about why it (PIPA) was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Unbelievable.......
  • I'm in asheville, Is there anything I can do locally? Is anyone else in WNC?

I'm meeting this Friday in downtown Raleigh with Elizabeth Outten, "
regional liaison in Raleigh," anyone care to join?

    Edit:  @ 9am.
  • @geegelehotpants Can you provide more details about the meeting? Or would you like people to contact you directly if they can go?

    @
    StopSOPA-HQ
Sure the only details I have are that the meeting is at 9am and held at the capital building. I am a grad student in computer science at NC STate Engineering. I am going on behalf of some of my fellow students who couldn't make it. I am primarily going to ask why Kay Hagan has chosen to endorse PIPA. Finally, I will bring my computer and review
http://hagan.senate.gov/ with the liaison while noting the number of times Senator Hagan's website breaches PIPA.

Edit: "We are located at the Terry Sanford Federal Courthouse at 310 New Bern Ave. Make your you bring your ID as it will be needed to get through security."
This is the office location in Raleigh.
