  • So as of today it looks like only myself and Gabe will be attending the meeting.

    Anyone else?
  • This is only the beginning, if this bill passes into law, WHO KNOWS where it will stop ? Last time I checked, it was US that put them into office, NOT the special interest groups. We need to send a VERY CLEAR message that we won't tolerate any of these half-educated idiots in Washington D.C. that WE rule this country and not the RIAA.
  • Stop SOPA and PIPA.... They can Pound Sand.... sigh
  • I know is late notice, but if you have a lack of people and would like one more, I live near downtown Orlando and can join you today if youd like
  • FYI I just invited Telemundo, it was last minute however they are going to try and send a representative to cover this and to make specific questions. I will be there too.
  • @RJEdmondson - you should definitely go! Click on Gabe's profile pic to e-mail him and let him know!

it saddens me that after all this talk of internet restriction people are so unbelievably lazy or self serving to take a moment and hit the little google search bar in the top of your chosen browser window to do  just five minutes worth of research and answer all your own questions in order to prepare for this. At this rate someone is always gonna be waiting on someone else to supply all ready dated or lame information to bring to a fight that could potentially effect our way of life. This is just as monumental exactly like prohibition and i think this should also further include all PIPA activities as well since PIPA is just SOPA's minimally less crazy brother. SOPA Voting has been pulled from Whitehouse voting floors

    Follow links below.

for all you lazies out there... let me help you.

    1 .What is SOPA?

    2. SOPA & PIPA

  • According to Facebook, 14 people went to this? How did it go? I wasn't able to leave work.

  • The meeting with Susan Fernandez went very well today. 3 people plus myself attended. The meeting lasted about 40 minutes.

Many thanks to Gabe, Rich & Miguel for taking the time to attend.

Susan Fernandez (Senator Rubio's Director)  was very appreciative we met with her stating "we were the 1st group to have a face to face and Rubio was well aware of the PIPA Bill concerns". She stated that while he may continue to co-sponsor the bill, he maybe softening his stance since many of his constituents have expressed serious concerns regarding the 2 bills during the January recess.

Susan also hinted that the Bills may not make it to vote due to all the opposition.I gave her plenty of printed information to pass onto to Rubio which she said she will scan and send to him in Washington.

I urge you all to call Rubio's office and let them know you are opposed to the Bills or better still,  make the effort to meet with Susan Fernandez or one of Rubio's staff. You may be asking yourself if it will make any difference whether you call or attend a meeting. I can assure you it makes the world of difference; Susan said so herself.

I will be keeping in touch with Fernandez to get progress reports on how these Bills are shaping up.

I am still trying to set up a meeting with Senator Nelson's staff but they are not as appeasing.

This is the comment I posted on Senator Bill Nelsons comments section of his website. "I am concerned that this legislation is being pushed forward without regard to the studies and opinions of internet experts. I am also concerned that the changes to the DNS will create an environment that will infringe upon our right as citizens to free speech.  It is called the world wide web for a reason. If you change the DNS to be US specific you will be threatening the global nature of the internet.  http://domainincite.com/docs/PROTECT-IP-Technical-Whitepaper-Final.pdf Have you read this report? Please do not pass this bill in its current form. We all agree that intellectual property must be protected but the language of this bill is too open and will not address the concerns it claims to protect. Thank you." So glad to see everyone banning together for this cause. Stay informed, take your stand. Does anyone know how the meeting went with Senator Rubio today?
  • Okay, I see LSams comment on the meeting with Senator Rubio. Thanks to all who were able to attend. Check this out http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/English_Wikipedia_anti-SOPA_blackout Wikipedia is blacking out their English language sites in protest!!! Spread the word!
  • "On September 22, 2011, a letter signed by over 350 businesses and organizations—including NBCUniversal, Pfizer, Ford Motor Company, Revlon, NBA, and Macmillan US—was sent to Congress encouraging the passage of the legislation."\

    Be advised....

  • greetings,
just thought i would let you know it almost 2am wed the 18th... wikipedia is blacked out.  craigslist has a black page when you go to thier site.  googled has black out too.   how many others will have the black out today?  very exiting as there is a national online protest today to get the message out.  spread the world and black out what you can on public media in protest of sopa and pipa.   to the author of this blog, thanks for your activism.  i did all the emails.  i could not make the meeting in orlando (i am in tampa).   i am with your in spirit.  if all this dose not send a message to the puppet politicians we are in serious trouble.
    all the best, laine

If ever you thought voicing your opinion doesn't make a difference I can tell you it does.

I just received a call from Senator Rubio's office saying he is withdrawing his support for the PIPA Bill and that he is urging Harry Reid to postpone the voting date.

Rubio was a co-sponsor of this bill and because of the calls from the public and our meeting yesterday, he has changed his position.

I urge you to call you local Representative and tell them to vote NO on the SOPA & PIPA Bills!
  • PS..I will be calling Senator Nelsons office to set up a meeting. Hope you will all try to attend.

We have already changed 1 FL Senators vote so let's do the same for Nelson.

If I don't hear from anyone I will be attending the meeting at 3pm on Thursday. If you need to contact me my number is 407-467-1705

    - Laurence
  • It  should please everyone in FL to know that Senator Rubio has changed his stance. He is now FULLY against the bill he has co-sponsored.  See here. We're making a difference everyone! Keep it up!
  • I just want to say THANK YOU to LSams and the others that met with Susan Fernandez to get our message to Sen. Rubio. I am sorry that I was not able to be there in person. If any meetings happen next week I will do my best to make it.
  • @LSams - Truly inspirational work all around - THANK YOU . We've just created another Facebook event for this new meeting: http://www.facebook.com/events/254816011258416.
Seriously - marvelous job so far, to all those who attended and helped make this meeting possible.

Everyone else: keep those phone calls, emails, and random drop-ins coming. Also please take a moment to write Senator Rubio a brief thank-you note for his ground-breaking withdrawal of support for PIPA.
  • So far I have heard responses from Gabe & Miguel regarding attendance today.

I will be meeting with someone from the staff at 3pm regardless of who shows so if you would like to show your support, you are welcome to attend.

  • Just to confirm the meeting is today Jan 19th @ 3pm not, Jan 20th as is posted on the top pf this page!
  • Hello, are people still invited to attend tomorrow's meeting?
  • I called both senators, i am however not in a good position to go to any meetings. I asked the receptionists to add my name to the list of people that are against the acts being passed. I hope that helps some.
  • @jaraujo The meeting is today (Thursday 19th) @ 3pm and all are invited
  • Met with one of Senator Nelson's Staff (Sherry Davich). Whilst polite she really wasn't familiar with the Bill  but it was a good meeting nonetheless.

Unfortunately only one other person attended (thanks Miguel).

They have received over 500 voice mails of opposition to the Bill but we need more; 500 isn't going to get the job done.

I urge you to pick up the phone and call Senator Nelson's office to voice your opposition; we only have a few days left and I believe he will still be voting in favor of the Bills.
  • I just had a 30 minute phone call with Senator Nelson's main Aid in D.C., Clint Odom. He explained Nelson's position being that he against piracy but believes the current PIPA Bill has issues but has potential to be amended into a Bill that will protect Intellectual Copyright and Property.

Mr. Odom also mentioned the concerns of pharmaceutical drug copies being sold on the internet and the involvement of other "interested parties" lobbying for the PIPA Bill to be passed. This leads me to believe the drug companies are involved also, hence the rush to push this Bill through Congress to be amended and voted upon in the near future.

Mr. Odom told me the vote on the Jan 24th is for PIPA Bill (SOPA is out) & whether or not to proceed forward with amending the PIPA Bill, not whether or not the Bill will be placed into the law books. This I can't confirm,

Senator Nelson's office is waiting on a new amendment to the PIPA Bill which they haven't yet received. If they don't receive one they will act accordingly.

Again I urge all of you to keep up the pressure by calling, emailing and meeting your local representatives.
  • It appears the SOPA & PIPA Bills have been cancelled:
