Rhode Island for Internet Freedom

Top Priority for RI: Attend a Townhall!

  • Click here to Join the Meetup Group and mark it on your calendar.  Then use Meetup's features to share it with your friends!  Discuss preparations on the Meetup group.
  • Then email patti_grandfield@reed.senate.gov to request a meeting with Senator Reed, who has no public stance on PIPA yet.

Be polite and professional, and request a meeting on behalf of Rhode Island for Internet Freedom (the folks in this forum) to discuss the PROTECT IP Act and SOPA.  Make it clear that you want to meet with the Senator during the January recess, and that you'll be bringing others from your group.  Have your calendar open when you call, so you can pick a time that works for you.  When finished, post a report-back.

For example: "Hi, my name is ________, I'm with
Rhode Island for Internet freedom, and I'm calling to request a meeting with Senator _______ during the January recess.  The PROTECT IP vote is happening on January 24th, and I wanted the Senator to understand my concerns before the vote happens."

IMPORTANT: If you do get a meeting, post another message. That way others can join you in your meeting.  If there's any other specific information we should include in this post, message us and we can add it.

  • I wish I'd known about this meeting before it happened - I would have been there with bells on! Very disturbed that my senator is one of the co-sponsors of PIPA. Scary as hell.
  • Received the following msg from Jack Reed's office:

    Good morning Ms. [name],

Thank you for your email regarding S. 968, the Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property (PROTECT IP) Act of 2011.

Regrettably, a meeting with Senator Reed will not be possible at this time, but I have forwarded your correspondence to the Senator’s legislative staff in DC so that they can keep you apprised of the legislation.

    Patti Grandfield

Office of US Senator Jack Reed

  • I am from CT and I still wrote. Where is your support RI?
  • @leslien Can you get a few friends from RI to write/call as well? Optimally, you all might find a time to stop by one of your Senators' local offices, and talk to a staffer in person. Thanks for getting involved!
