Top Priority for NV: Set up Meetings

There aren't any public events yet, so the most important thing is to get meetings with Senators. Here's what you need to do:

  • Call 702-388-5020 to meet with Senator Reid, who has no public position on PIPA and is Senate leader.
  • Email corinne_zakzeski@heller.senate.gov to meet with Senator Heller, who has no public position on PIPA yet.

Be polite and professional, and request a meeting on behalf of Nevada for Internet Freedom (the folks in this forum) to discuss the PROTECT IP Act and SOPA.  Make it clear that you want to meet with the Senator during the January recess, and that you'll be bringing others from your group.  Have your calendar open when you call, so you can pick a time that works for you.  When finished, post a report-back. 

For example: "Hi, my name is ________, I'm with Nevada for Internet freedom, and I'm calling to request a meeting with Senator _______ during the January recess.  The PROTECT IP vote is happening on January 24th, and I wanted the Senator to understand my concerns before the vote happens."


IMPORTANT: If you do get a meeting, post another message. That way others can join you in your meeting.  If there's any other specific information we should include in this post, message us and we can add it.

    I just got off the phone with Senator Reid's office.  His wife, they said, is going through chemotherapy and they're still waiting to get word on when he can start taking meetings again.  They took my name and number and said they would call me back with a meeting date.  Others should continue to call.

    I will try calling on Monday as well, in the mean time if someone is successful at setting up a meeting please post info or contact me so I can attend or help in any way possible.

    Senator Reid has his own agenda and it never has been in our best interest sadly enough.

    I've never protested or even asked many questions about things I've felt strongly for or against. I need to either step up or shut up. I would love to attend as well, I don't want the decision to "shut up" be made for me.

    I just messaged Senator Reid to let him know that I will withdraw my support of him in the next election if he supports PIPA.

    Hey Guys just wanted to let you know that I have submitted an email to Senator Reid to request a meeting during the January Recess.

    I work for the largest locally owned and operated ISP Here in Las Vegas, NV and I have been following this for quite some time. Please keep me updated as this progresses.

    This is what I sent him:

    Senator Reid,

    I am writing you today to express my concerns regarding SOPA and PIPA. I do not believe these to be in the best interest for Nevada as a whole, nor do I believe them to be in the best interest of the United States. 

    I would like to request a meeting with you along with a group of individuals, Nevada for Internet freedom, during the January recess.

    Keep writing, calling, and emailing him and his office.  Even if his wife is enduring chemotherapy, he is not.  He holds a public office and must acknowledge the voice of the people he represents.  There are several people in his office that can field a meeting also.  Our voices must be heard.

    Even the suffragist's were persecuted and put in jail for picketing a wartime president.  Do not let your completely justified care for his family in this difficult time trump your completely justified concern for the smothering of American Freedom of Speech of hundreds of millions of people, or our right to innovate and improve without some billionaire corporation shutting down our ability to make our innovations known on the internet, just because it could take consumers from their market share.  Sites we love, such as Ebay, Google, and Facebook would not exist today, had this regulation existed in their time of conception.

    Thanks for establishing the Nevada arm of this protest, whoever did.  I have been against this thing since I first learned about it, and if one of you manages to get a meeting scheduled, I am in.  Keep me posted on your progress. I received a blanket response from Reid's office on 1-3-12, which I am posting below.  Clearly Reid addresses nothing specific, but I guess that's what you get when staff reads email instead of the Senator himself.  I am going to place a telephone call today, I think that is the most effective route at this point.  His staffers will eventually complaint to Senator Reid if enough calls are made.     Thank you for contacting me regarding your concerns with the pending Senate and House bills regarding the protection of intellectual property rights. I appreciate hearing from you.

    The growth of the Internet and digital technologies pose new challenges to maintaining the balance between protecting intellectual property rights and the free flow of information. As you know, digital content can be easily duplicated and distributed. And counterfeit products, such as fake pharmaceuticals and brake pads, have threatened the health and safety of American consumers. I believe in protecting copyrighted and trademarked materials, protecting the health and safety of Americans, and compensating artists and innovators for their work, but I also understand the importance of maintaining an internet environment that promotes innovation and the need to protect consumer rights.

    As you know, Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) introduced the Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act of 2011 (PROTECT IP Act or S. 968). This legislation, among other things, would authorize the Attorney General or an intellectual property rights owner to take action against an Internet site dedicated to infringing activities. The PROTECT IP Act was unanimously reported out of the Senate Judiciary committee and is scheduled for a cloture vote on Tuesday, January 24, 2012. If 60 Senators vote in favor of cloture, the Senate will proceed to vote on whether to pass the bill and send it to the House of Representatives for consideration.

    Sent a very professional email and left a message to talk about this. We must keep the pressure up and STOP SOPA!

    When we have this meeting we must voice that online piracy is an issue, but changing the entire way the internet works JUST for HOLLYWOOD is madness! I was reading a report that if you take "the internet" VS "hollywood" when it comes to job creation and helping the economy, hollywood actually doesn't help out that much.

    Keep it up, everyone! We've had a huge impact over the past 24 hours, and we need to use that momentum to reach those Senators (like Reid) who aren't responding to their constituents' concerns. Call, email, fax, and (optimally) go to your Senators' local offices and ask for meetings, preferably under the banner of "Nevada for Internet Freedom." That'll let the Senators' staffs know that there are a lot of you out there, that you're all working together, and that they therefore cannot possibly hope to ignore you. Stay strong out there - we're making progress!

    I sent an email to Dean Heller's office requesting a meeting during the January recess.  I received this response:
