Louisiana for Internet Freedom

Top Priority for LA: Set up Meetings

Please continue trying to schedule meetings:

  • Call 504-589-2427 to meet with Senator Landrieu, a co-sponsor of PIPA.
  • Call the office nearest to you to find out about the local town halls Senator Vitter has planned. He is a co-sponsor of PIPA.

Be polite and professional, and request a meeting on behalf of Louisiana for Internet Freedom (the folks in this forum) to discuss the PROTECT IP Act and SOPA.  Make it clear that you want to meet with the Senator during the January recess, and that you'll be bringing others from your group.  Have your calendar open when you call, so you can pick a time that works for you.  When finished, post a report-back.

For example: "Hi, my name is ________, I'm with Louisiana for Internet freedom, and I'm calling to request a meeting with Senator _______ during the January recess.  The PROTECT IP vote is happening on January 24th, and I wanted the Senator to understand my concerns before the vote happens."

IMPORTANT: If you do get a meeting, post another message. That way others can join you in your meeting.  If there's any other specific information we should include in this post, message us and we can add it.

senator landrieu and vitter are back in  washington and i can't  get a meeting with them in person unless i go to washington.
  • If that's the case, then request a meeting with a member of their staff - lots of senators have a "regional director" at each office that meet with constituents on behalf of the Senators. These meetings can be extremely effective, and are as valuable as a meeting with the Senator.

Senator's staff told me that his regional staff will be hosting a series of Town Hall meetings in the various parishes. You should go here to find the office nearest to you and ask them about said meetings.
  • sorry but i don't know anyone here that i can ask to join in these meetings. and i did phone calls and went to vitters office in Lafayette. and i try to get a meeting and they tell me that just wait for a call. i never got a call back despite going to the office and wanting a meeting with the rep for vitter. i talk to the office in Washington and they said they pass a message. i gotten no response back from them

i speak with landrieu's rep in lake Charles and in short despite the arguments with him and  by noticing on the phone i had him looking for ways to combat my arguments. but the end result is despite the arguments made and the concerns he said that she will support the bill.

i want to make clear i did not say i was from this site because i wanted to try and speak to them first. becasue i wanted to face them alone and see for my self what there veiws are. im sorry

now that i know there views i need  help with a local groupe and honestly i am the only one i know of that rejects sopa and pipa.

  • @mysticdx Did Vitter's staff make no mention of others calling from the Louisiana for Internet Freedom or any scheduled town hall meetings? Maybe the staffer I talked to was just crazy and there aren't any planned at the moment.

I'd like to stress that no matter how frustrated you are with a Senator's position that you really shouldn't take it out on their staff. The staff work just as hard (or, in some cases, harder) than the Senators for a much smaller reward. They will be more helpful if you're polite.

Sorry about the disappointing result, but thank you so much for trying. Even though it might seem fruitless, you're seriously helping the cause. Thanks.
  • ok i got 2 things done

    1. i can not get a personal meeting with him but i can send a mesage to him and say no to sopa and get a letter back.

    2. there is a town hall meeting in town of turkey creek in the town hall on the 10th in evangeline parish at 12:30 p.m.

i will call turkey creek city hall to find out where the town hall is tomorrow.
  • Awesome! Let us know the details and we'll help promote them!

U.S. Sen. David Vitter, R-Metairie, is hosting meetings in Evangeline and Sabine parishes next week to hear from constituents.

    The
first meeting will be at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Turkey Creek
Community Center, 12850 Veterans Memorial Highway, in Evangeline Parish.

The Sabine Parish meeting is set for 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Many Town Hall.

    "We'll
be discussing the issues most important to them, including my efforts
to bring Louisiana common sense to Washington, reform the culture of
runaway federal spending and debt, and develop positive solutions to get
our economy going again," Vitter said.
  • i will go out this sunday and find the places they talk about and place it on google maps or gps location.
  • @mysticdx thanks for the heads up!!! This is great info. Make sure to let us know how the meeting goes!

thank you for all you done. but i will not be going to these town hall meetings. i wanted to get a meeting in person with the senator's. i feel if i go to these town hall meetings i will be looked at as a trouble maker.

thank you for your kindness. good luck,
  • Thank you for your work on this important issue. I have looked through the site, but I do not see any listing for an online petition. Is there one and if so, what is the URL? I am pretty sure that most of the politicians are aware that this is a volatile issue, and I seriously doubt that they or their staff will welcome meetings. But mysticdx is not alone in apprehension: a petition is another powerful way to make our voices heard. If there is not an active petition, please let me know as soon as possible and I will start one.
  • I don't think there is an on-line petition yet - would you be willing to start one specifically for LA? Because the next vote is taking place in the Senate, we're trying to show Senators that their own constituents largely oppose the bill, so we're encouraging people to work on a state-by-state level. Thanks for getting involved!
  • Greetings everyone.  I'm just seeing this on how to get active.  I live right in BR.  I'm surprised there's not been an announcement of a meeting here.  I will try tomorrow to find what I can.  I work for the state.  I'm not anti-government.  But I am anti-bad-regulation.  And this is such.

Thanks both to mysticdx and downcowboy for voicing concern.  I too am concerned.  What a wretched thing.  If either of you are on social networks... broadcast this link to all of your locals.  Help get folks involved that way at least.  And let them know you're involved too.  The same info you share here, share there.  It matters.  :-)

  • I think david vitter is having another town hall meeting in jonesville on january 19th
  • HEY! I live in Harvey, LA.

Nobody lives around me that even remotely knows what SOPA is much less have access to the internet, I need help cause nobody here, or around me even seems to care.
  • I just heard about It today, Jan 16th, I agree with the above, Nobody around me even remotely knows what SOPA .  I'm surprised also because I just heard about it.  WE have to stop it in its tracks! If anybody in St Tamany Parish knows anything let me know! snooska 35, at jimmd3530@att.net. Thanks
  • Hi all :)
No one seems to know about it/care about it in Lake Charles, either (at least, from my observations).  Wikipedia going down is bound to have an impact, though, especially around campus.  I sent my e-mails to the senators, and I'll print out a few fliers, but honestly, I think Wikipedia shutting down is going to reach more Louisiana residents than anything.  After tomorrow, more people will know what's going on, and with knowledge comes power :D

  • our last freedom of speech is the internet...refuse to give that up...
  • @Snooska35 and others,

I moved from Hammond to Covington to take a new job. I work in IT and sideline a VHP business. This legislation is dangerous to both the company I work for as well as my own business. I routinely post the statuses of both SOPA and PIPA on facebook and I have personally begun to boycott the companies I can that support either of these horrible abominations. At this point, I currently refuse to do business with the following:
    3M
    1-800-PetMeds
    Adidas
    Comcast
    Bose
    Dollar General
    EA
    GoDaddy
    Harley-Davidson
    Marvel Entertainment
    McGraw-Hill
    Monster Cable
    New Balance
    Nike
    Nintendo
    Reebok
    Rite Aid
    Rosetta Stone
    Scholastic
    SoBe
    Sony
    Dow Chemical
    McGraw-Hill
    Toshiba
    Wal-Mart

Any new vendor for my own business gets "background checked" to see where their position is on SOPA/PIPA. I agree that the blackout will get more attention than anything. The thing that sucks is that my ISP will be starting up services at my new address tomorrow when everyone will be blacked out. I will suffer for the cause but that is fine. I have also started the process of moving my domains off of GoDaddy and on to Name.com. Everyone can boycott this in their own little way. This is just mine. It is really kind of fun letting companies know that their actions and stupidity have actually cost them a sale or two (Cisco had to learn this lesson). Everyone has alternatives with the exception of the government granted monopoly that is AT&T for internet.

As for status, I know the White House opposes SOPA and have even vowed to veto it should it get there. And SOPA have actually been indefinitely shelved. PIPA is still waiting to be voted on. I hope this gives someone some inspiration to stand up and stop this trampling of rights.

  • Keep it up, everyone! We've had a huge impact over the past 24 hours, and we need to use that momentum to reach those Senators (like Landrieu) who aren't responding to their constituents' concerns. Call, email, fax, and (optimally) go to your Senators' local offices and ask for meetings (and recruit others to go with you), preferably under the banner of "Louisiana for Internet Freedom." That'll let the Senators' staffs know that there are a lot of you out there, that you're all working together, and that they therefore cannot possibly hope to ignore you. Stay strong out there - we're making progress!
  • I'm sorry abo ut before . I was 1 and trying to inform everybody . twitter , facebook etc. I try email both senators and got auto reply saying they back the bill . Truest second email to senator Mary but got no reply . Ty to those who came .at least I know now my work has not been in vain.
