  • @Tory can you call/write you Senators and ask for an in-person meeting with them or a member of their local staffs? We're trying to get as much facetime with as many Senators as possible, since that's one of the most effective means of showing how strong the opposition is to PIPA. Thanks!
  • Going to email you today Diane. Just ask a few questions and help you in any way I can. If you have questions you like to ask please do, ask any question you can think of ;-)
  • To answer StopSOPA-HQ question regarding Senator Bingaman. He has offices through out the state of NM. Not sure if I want to go to Santa Fe again (50 min. drive) but I do realize that if we all don't show up together it has a less powerful impact!! Its going to be more difficult this time for me because of work. Last time was pure luck that I could go. Glad your on-board Tory and welcome ;-) This is going to depend what time we can arrange this next meeting with Bingaman. Just to let everyone know because I'm keeping track of this SOPA crap from Washington. Lamar Smith (R) Texas Congressman and his cronies are determined to pass the bill. In all likely hood it will probably pass but with the Nuclear Option by Google and company it will get unprecedented attention. I expect the bill to repeal do to national and Global anger >:-(  If you know anyone in Texas tell them to kick Lamar Smith out of office this year. Lamar runs for office again this year 2012.
  • Hey, I live in SF and just tuned in to this on Jan 11. I can add my body and voice to any meeting anytime. Please keep me posted for meeting times or conversations.
    Chris
  • Just saw this today from a Reddit post, you could probably get some more people if you post meetings on www.reddit.com/r/albuquerque and www.reddit.com/r/santafe
  • Hello,

I live in Grant County in Tyrone NM. I too am very concerned about our vanishing rights and assault on our freedoms. I would be more than willing to attend a meeting with the senators staff if one can be arranged. I have no FB or any other social networking profile due to my extreme distrust of the current government. I would like this to change in the future. I should not be afraid of my government, they should be afraid of us as we put them in office. It is my intention to stress to TPTB that it is their constitutional duty to uphold our freedoms and that I will vote accordingly. Please, someone let me know what is planned as I do not have the funds to drive any distance unnecessarily (fixed income), but I am willing to spend what little I have to voice my concerns if it will help maintain the freedoms I fought for while serving my country. I do not want this to have been in vain as well as maintaining my childrens future freedom. The only way to contact me is by phone or to email at kcanale@netzero.net. I will then give my phone number for further planning.

                                                                                                          Yours in Freedom,
                                                                                                              Keith Canale

  • Hi folks, just discovered this today.
My family and I moved from Washington last year. I used to work for a pollster. Very familiar with this kind of lobbying, and love to do it. Mostly, I can just sit quietly and be a body, letting others speak, or I can do the speaking for the group.
Important: group should be 3 to 8 or so people. More than eight or ten looks like a gang. Fewer than 3 looks lame. A staffer is almost as important as the official himself (all male reps in Albuquerque).

I volunteer to go to a meeting here in ABQ, or one in SF if necessary. Flexible schedule, and have done this at least 40 times so no jitters.

Here's to you all for getting engaged in this huge and important fight... one congress critter at a time!

  • Ok, I'm late to the party. I live in Albuquerque, and I am willing to travel to SF to meet with politicians and their respective staffers.

I will be directing all my domains to black out with reddit, and will participate in the facebook process as well.

  • Hi Everyone,  I heard from Senator Bingham’s office.  The man I spoke with said
he would be glad to arrange a meeting for us with himself and staff from Senator
Udall’s office.  I'll let you know when I hear from him.  Soon I hope... Diane
  • @djsolomon - this could be amazing. Two Senators in one meeting. Please let us know the details as soon as possible. We will definitely find back-up for you!
  • Actually, it's too late to schedule a meeting with either senator in person, but staff from both offices will still give us a platform to voice our concerns.
  • @djsolomon - we're very aware. Most people have been meeting with regional directors or legislative aides assigned to this bill. However, getting members of both Senator's staff would be an amazingly efficient way to communicate our concerns to both of them!
  • For anyone who hasn't heard, the bill is dead for this month. http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2012/01/under-voter-pressure-members-of-congress-backpedal-on-sopa.ars  So the slime balls that they are going to wait till things calm down and try to slip it with another bill later. Please, when it comes time to vote this November, please DON'T VOTE FOR THE INCUMBENT!! We need to get new people in office, people who have a better understanding of the internet. http://motherboard.vice.com/2011/12/16/dear-congress-it-s-no-longer-ok-to-not-know-how-the-internet-works  I think its a good idea to spread the word that America needs new politicians in office. The current incumbents are extremists who always seem to be deadlocked. They care more about themselves than the people they are suppose to represent. DEFEATING THIS BILL IN THE LONG RUN WILL GET YOU NOWHERE!!! VOTE FOR POLITICIANS WHO WILL SUPPORT INTERNET FREEDOM AND THE POPULACE. MAKE IT AN ISSUE, GO TO THE SOURCE, YOU HAVE THE POWER!! Thank you and goodnight!!
  • @djsolomon - Is there any more information on the meeting you are setting up with the Senators staff? Also is anyone planning on organizing at the roundhouse tomorrow?
  • No, I haven't heard anything back from Senator Bingham's staff person and have left him a voice mail.  It's going to be really interesting to see what happens when a large portion of the web goes dark!

Guys, it's Senator Bingaman, NOT Bingham! He's been a US Senator in NM since 1982, so everyone in NM knows who he is by name. The name is also incorrect on the list here: http://www.reddit.com/r/politics/comments/oe3mf/these_61_senators_are_refusing_to_meet_with_their/

PLEASE don't mess this up! Getting the name wrong is a big faux pas.

I live in Taos and can join with your group to Santa Fe if given enough notice, like at least a couple days - more is better.

  • BTW, Sen. Jeff Bingaman is retiring at the end of his term this year, which means he's not worried at all about re-election.

@krinklyfig Thanks for the clarifications - getting names right is definitely important. Hopefully the fact that Bingaman is retiring means that appeals to his logic and sense of right and wrong will be more effective than appeals to the financial needs of his re-election campaign!
  • Sen. Bingaman has been a "reliable" Democrat as far as the party goes with a relatively mainstream Democratic platform (mostly liberal but pro-corporate). I am not surprised he is supporting PIPA, although he is responsive to his constituency and is thoughtful and intelligent. This doesn't mean he will change his position on PIPA, but it does mean his position is not entrenched. Sen. Bingaman doesn't need to worry about votes for re-election. He also doesn't need to worry about future campaign donations from the RIAA, MPAA, etc. Not sure about his plans as far as lobbying in his post-Senate life, which could influence his vote.
  • I called both Senators today and filled-out about three petitions against SOPA/PIPA. I believe it was a Google, EFF, and Public Knowledge petitions. Feels damn good fighting for what is right!! Kudos to all who help make this work. How's it going Krinklyfig?? Nice to have more people fight this.
  • Food for thought! You know what might be a good idea?? If locals share info/concerns, become part of a local team say team Albuquerque, team Santa Fe, etc., These teams can morph into something bigger when necessary. I really like to see more competition as far as ISP's in New Mexico. CenturyLink service for broadband is 7-Mbps for $45 after 12 months. Comcast is also expensive. If you don't know, the prices for hardware (fiber-optic cables/servers) has gone down and yet Americans still pay premium for service. I would love to change this. NM is so behind in many areas of services, education, etc., Like try to make things happen. It would be great to have White Spaces internet available already, unlicensed of course! There is strength in numbers!!
  • Not only is Bingaman a cosponsor, but so is Tom Udall and Rep. Ben Luján!
