New York for Internet Freedom: NYC protest on the 18th w/ NYTM! Details in-side

Top Priority for NY: Set up Meetings

Gillibrand and Schumer are ignoring our requests, so its time to take to the streets! On Janurary 18th, the NYC Tech Community will be holding protests outside of the offices of both Schumer and Gillibrand. Please vist the NYTM site for more info!

  • Email scheduling_schumer@schumer.senate.gov to meet with Senator Schumer, a co-sponsor of PIPA. Call 212-486-4430 to follow up.
  • Fax 866-824-6340* to meet with Senator Gillibrand, a co-sponsor of PIPA.

Be polite and professional, and request a meeting on behalf of New York for Internet Freedom (the folks in this forum) to discuss the PROTECT IP Act and SOPA.  Make it clear that you want to meet with the Senator during the January recess, and that you'll be bringing others from your group.  Have your calendar open when you call, so you can pick a time that works for you.  When finished, post a report-back.

For example: "Hi, my name is ________, I'm with New York for Internet freedom, and I'm calling to request a meeting with Senator _______ during the January recess.  The PROTECT IP vote is happening on January 24th, and I wanted the Senator to understand my concerns before the vote happens."

IMPORTANT: If you do get a meeting, post another message. That way others can join you in your meeting.  If there's any other specific information we should include in this post, message us and we can add it.

  • I was wondering if my local Senator Jim Seward was involved & if I should try schedule a meeting with him. Any help would be great!!!
  • Do you have concise talking points I can have for my conversation.  While I'm a great improvisor on the piano I freeze up when I have to talk.
  • We are working on some talking points now. Try focusing on securing a meeting first - you'll more than likely have at least a week to prepare before you're firmly scheduled.
  • I will try to schedule a meeting with both Senator Coats and Senator Lugar with any kind of help.
  • Just emailed Senator Schumer,  re: peteruno -- I'm also interested in talking points
  • I was just told that it takes a minimum of 5 weeks to schedule a meeting. Did anyone find any luck?
  • I also eamiled Schumer, Lets see what happens!!!
  • I emailed Schumer too, but since I don't have a fax I might have difficulty getting in touch with Senator Gillibrand. Plus, from the replies I've gotten back from her every time I've emailed her about Protect-IP, she's one supporter who won't be swayed easily. It's gonna take everything we've got to convince her otherwise.
  • Well I'm on board, so if a meeting does get set up be sure to post it! I sent my email, I'll try calling during the day tomorrow
  • I was just wondering if you had to time to meet with me so that I could give you my opinion on how passing SOPA is going to stop the great internet revolution and restrict the great freedoms that we were all born entitled too. I believe that in 100 years this time period will be looked at the same way the "Great Awakenings" were looked at in American history. They will see this time period as a time when information was spread freely and quickly without fear of persecution. Passing SOPA will not only encourage and endorse government censorship, but it will leave a permanent black taint on the good name America. This will act will be looked at as the equivalent of John Adams Sedition Acts. Please I implore you not to let corporations corrupt our great free government by allowing SOPA to pass. I would really like to meet and discuss the gravity of this situation in person so please e-mail me back as quickly as you can. ( I do understand you are a busy man)

    Thats what i said
  • Hi, my name is elline cruz, I'm with New York for Internet freedom, and I'm calling to request a meeting with Senator Gillibrand during the January recess.  The PROTECT IP vote is happening on January 24th, and I wanted the Senator to understand my concerns before the vote happens.
  • For those of us in NY and don't have access to a fax machine, you can contact Kirsten Gillibrand here: http://gillibrand.senate.gov/contact/index.cfm
  • Both, emailed and faxed. I will call on Monday to follow up.
  • I am interested in meeting with you to discuss the PROTECT IP Act and SOPA. The PROTECT IP Act vote is happening on January the 24th and I feel that it's important for you to be exposed to the concerns that I and many others share. In particular these acts provide government powers that are similar to how China, North Korea and Iran exercise internet censorship. I look forward to our discussion.
  • ok, the office of Senator Gillibrand called and they asked me to send request by email to invite@gillibrand.senate.gov
  • This is all bull shit.

Everyone who is putting millions of dollars on this bill ARE THE ONES WHO STARTED THE FILE SHARING SOFTWEAR.
Are you all serious sopa lovers? ARE YOU REALLY HAPPY WITH THIS?
The people who are Sueing people for millions of dollars TO SOMETHING THEY SHOWED AND SHARED THREW THE HOLE INTERNET AND STARTED THIS FILE SHARING SOFTWEAR are NOW Sueing us.
Just stop trying to cencor the Internet. Are you THAT DESPERAITE FOR MONEY? Arent you hall happy with your big millions already NOPE YOU SUDDENLY GO TO SUEING PEOPLE.
    Self fish
    Evil
    And ALOT more
  • @Reevee - save it for the Congressmen! We're all on your side. No one in this forum is interested in PIPA (or SOPA) passing.

@bellorusha @canth @chi @elline15 @grimmy @dramagirl1990 @ninjaman999 @jefftimesten @joe99 - great work guys! Make sure to mention New York for Internet Freedom, if they hear lots of requests from one group they'll be more likely to grant at least a meeting with their staff. Are you guys all in the city? Where are these meetings being proposed?

@meowcat - yup, sounds like the average response. As more people under the New York for Internet Freedom banner ask for meetings they'll be more likely to respond quicker.

  • Any ideas how many people would be able/willing to meet from this forum?  And where we'd need to go?  I'm still new to this debate and want to become better informed.
I sent the following to each senator (changed address, of course).  I poached from some of you, so thanks!

    Good Afternoon:
I'm with New York for Internet freedom, and I'm emailing to request a meeting with Senator Schumer during the January recess.  The PROTECT IP vote is happening on January 24th, and I wanted the Senator to understand my concerns before the vote happens.  If passed, these acts would empower the government to exercise internet censorship similarly to the governments of China, North Korea, and Iran.
    Thank you for your consideration.

  • Mr schumer, please vote down this piece of garbage legislation. It is in your best interest as well as ours.

  • I'm in Brooklyn
  • I have something to say, Can someone please tell me if I have a good point?

The bill should not pass because this is the way movie companies want to keep us from technological innovations.

For $11.99 you can have ANY 2 disks movies in Netflix or Blockbusters. And the movie companies are fine with it.
So why do we have to be stuck with physical DVDs and Postal Office?

    - People are choosing to download pirate copies just because it's convenient.

so for $11.99 you can watch maximum amount of 14 disks in month (1 disk per day and 1 day for shipping), so if they would do $11.99 for 14 movies a month, or next step, $19.99 for 30 movies a month, who would need to download anything pirate?

To me this is looks like when NYC subway could not be approved/constructed in 1860s, becuase the guys who owned Bus system with a lot of money wouldn't let this happen for years and years, because buses are how the they made their money, even though people were suffering. Now the movie companies with a lot of money will change the whole Internet, in order to hold us in the stone age with their Blu-Ray disks, that nobody needs.

That what I would say to a senator if I'll ever meet him. Tell me if that is a good point.

    Thanks.
  • @Bellorusha BINGO. Need proof? Music piracy went down 25% in Sweden after Spotify was released to the public.
  • this is one reason id prefer to live in a different country. land of the free? censorship doesnt seem so free to me. if we truly were free, there wouldnt even be a thought about censoring anything.
  • Hey New York people--any luck yet with getting a meeting? I'd like to help plan and possibly attend with you. I am an entrepreneur launching a business with a major web component. I am also a former history high school teacher with no fears about public speaking or talking politics, and an active (and frustrated) member of the Democratic party.

Let me know what I can do, and if you need me to help lead in any way.

  • @XntheBoundary do you want to make the call to the office to schedule a meeting. Schumer is a big target -- he needs to know how important stopping these bills are. He also has the ear of Senator Reid and cares about the national mood on bills and such. He needs to be met with. If you help schedule a time, we will definitely help find people to go with you.
  • @jefftimestan we have talking points in the sidebar now. any luck? can people call to follow up and confirm a meeting?

  • I just sent this email—hat tips to several of you, from whom I poached as well.

    Hello,
I'm with New York for Internet freedom, and I'm emailing to request a meeting with Senator Schumer during the January recess.  The PROTECT IP vote is happening on January 24th, and I wanted the Senator to understand my concerns before the vote happens.

If passed, these acts would empower the government to exercise internet censorship similarly to the governments of China, North Korea, and Iran. The Act does not protect creativity and the open exchange of ideas, it strangles them. If it passes, we will be depriving ourselves of our country's single most powerful resource: our ingenuity. Please let us sit down with the Senator to discuss this critical matter before it comes to a vote.

    Thank you for your consideration.

    Julie Polk
  • @Sallie Is there an agenda for the meeting on Friday?
  • @Sallie Is that a meeting with one of the senators?
  • If the corporations behind SOPA are illuminati-controlled, then I gotta say there is absolutely nothing the world can do. The same way young kids have to sell their souls to them in orden to gain fame, they will control everything and almost every one. It will not surprise me that for security measures America also starts suggesting people that they should wear a chip in their hands or foreheads "/.
  • I was calling 212-486-4430 for 2 days and today I got through. You just need to let it ring for like 5 minutes. Ok, so the guy on the phone said that I have to send another email to follow up, but senator have a very busy schedule and will meet with me in minimum a month. I said that the vote is happening on Jan.24, and the guys replied that they pretty much don't care.  I emailed a follow up email. Will keep you posted. So from what I understand nobody will meet with Schumer
  • @Bellorusha - You should also ask for a meeting with a member of his staff. The Senators do have very busy schedules, most have over a million constituents asking for a part of their time. Members of the Senator's staff take their jobs very seriously, and will pass your concerns up the chain. Keep trying, I'm sure you'll find someone on Schumer's staff that will be helpful!

@Sallie - what is this meeting concerning and what will the agenda be?

@ChuflaiDotNet - Dan Brown isn't affiliated with FFTF
  • @Bellorusha this is awesome work. we will be launching a campaign to get schumer to hear us. he is obviously ignoring us. so, if we both push, we'll have to get his ear.
  • @StopSOPA-HQ - so I should call and ask for meeting with member of his staff? They guy on the phone wanted to take a message for senator. Should I tell him everything on the phone? Or Should push for a meeting?
  • @Bellorusha definitely do ask for a meeting with a member of his staff: any in-person conversation shows a much higher level of interest in the issue than sending an email does, and the staff members will relay their overall impressions of how much constituents care about the issue back up the chain of command. So make sure they know how much you oppose PIPA!
  • NYC Meeting this Friday, Jan. 13th at 8PM till 9 at 244 W. 54th St. 10th Fl., Studio 2 Organize to meet with Senators Schumer and Gilibrand (co-sponsors of PIPA) Please contact their offices to arrange meeting, as will I. Here is the Capital Hill Switchboard number: 202-224-3121. Scheduling requests in NYC are handled through their Washington offices. SEE YOU THIS FRIDAY THE 13th AT 8PM!!!
  • NYC:  The agenda for this Friday, January 13th at 8PM-9 at 244 W. 54th St., 10th flo., Studio 2 is to speak with fellow concerned New Yorkers about how we have proceeded to arrange an appointment or will proceed to do so and what we will say if a meeting with our Senators can be secured. Sallie
  • Because I live upstate in Albany and not down in the city, I will not be able to attend the meeting (which makes me sad).  But I will try to get others to support your cause.  My local Occupy movement would be interested in knowing about this.
  • How does this not violate our rights? Are they really this desparate for money? It could crush our economy! I think about half of the stuff keeping us afloat right now is built on the web. I dont watch the news, i dont read the paper. I get it all from the internet. I am a facebook user. This would most likely distroy all these things. We would be unable to blog, if we have background music? Its like theyre trying to take over!
  • @Phanto @Bellorusha Update: One of the major take-aways from the briefing call with Public Knowledge was that you don't have to set up a formal meeting to come in and talk to someone in a Senator's local office - you can just show up! So anyone who can't make it to the meeting: just find the location of Cornyn/Hutchinson's closest office, recruit a friend or two, and get in there! Again, the most important objective here is to get facetime with someone affiliated with the Senators, because each face-to-face conversation is going to be a lot more memorable than even hundreds of emails.
  • @Sallie Do you want us to create a fftf Facebook event for your meeting? It might draw a few more people.
  • Try to set up a meeting...Its not happening.
  • @Sallie @StopSOPA-HQ How many people are you looking for to attend the friday meeting? I haven't been able to get through to the office concerning a meeting but would love to come show my support if it would be helpful to have a crowd.
  • NYC: The agenda for this Friday, January 13th at 8PM-9 at 244 W. 54th St., 10th fl., Studio 2 is to speak with fellow concerned New Yorkers about how we have proceeded to arrange an appointment or will proceed to do so and WHAT WE WILL PRESENT if a meeting with our Senators can be secured.   I look forward to meeting all those who are able to attend.  TO CARYNA:  the space holds 50 people comfortably, so feel free to invite as many people as you wish to this preparatory event.
  • @Sallie at this meeting, please encourage people to drop by the Senator's offices unannounced with informative literature in order to show that there are lots of concerned citizens!
  • Just emailed 'ol Chuckie boy, will email Gillibrand next with the address provided^. Does anyone know if he would meet at the capital? I am an Albany resident and although a NYC commute is possible it is less convenient.
  • Just spoke with his office again on the phone, the guy said the phone is going off the hook, and that the senator IS meeting with people. How can it be? in nobody met with hi from this group.

When I asked him how can senator support something that everybody is against it, he said "We have the same amount of call from people who SUPPORT the bill". Why would any regular person, not in the movie business supports that? I simple don't believe that. How can stop this lie?????? How can the senator's office lie to people?
  • @Bellorusha next time you call, can you get the staffer's name? We'd love to have someone to point a finger at. We're currently designing a campaign that will be aimed specifically at Sen. Schumer.

Anyone else calling Schumer's NYC office, have you been met the same rudeness???
  • @StopSOPA-HQ - can I ask, who are you? who is behind that site that makes people fight?
