Cali for Net Freedom: Senators are ignoring us, so let's schedule random drop-ins everywhere!

Top Priority for CA: Coordinate drop-ins across the state!

Your Senators are giving us the cold shoulder! So someone decided to take action! He or She set up a Google Calendar to schedule drop-ins to the LA offices of both Senator Feinstein and Senator Boxer ALL NEXT WEEK. Find a group of people you'd like to drop-in with a sign up for a time here: https://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=mu8v5ms4qv6kfpnjv88dvm1ito@group.calendar.google.com&ctz=America/Los_Angeles

  • Email scheduling@boxer.senate.gov for group meetings only with names of all participants to meet with Senator Boxer, a co-sponsor of PIPA.
  • Fill out this form, email DC staff at scheduling@feinstein.senate.gov, or to meet with CA staff, fax 415-393-0710 to meet with Senator Feinstein, also a co-sponsor of PIPA.

Be polite and professional, and request a meeting on behalf of California for Internet Freedom (the folks in this forum) to discuss the PROTECT IP Act and SOPA.  Make it clear that you want to meet with the Senator during the January recess, and that you'll be bringing others from your group.  Have your calendar open when you call, so you can pick a time that works for you.  When finished, post a report-back.

For example: "Hi, my name is ________, I'm with California for Internet freedom, and I'm calling to request a meeting with Senator _______ during the January recess.  The PROTECT IP vote is happening on January 24th, and I wanted the Senator to understand my concerns before the vote happens."

IMPORTANT: If you do get a meeting, post another message. That way others can join you in your meeting.  If there's any other specific information we should include in this post, message us and we can add it.

Sent in a request form via E-Mail. This is for the Los Angeles office. I'll post back when I have a response--confirmed date for appearance.

EDIT AS OF 1/13/2012 - JUST RECEIVED THIS AS A RESPONSE:

    Sheldon,

Thank you for contacting our office to arrange a meeting with Senator Feinstein to discuss the PROTECT IP Act.  Unfortunately, Senator Feinstein has received more than 200 individual requests to meet on this bill.  She is travelling around California and it is difficult for her to accommodate every request.

However, Senator Feinstein understands your concerns regarding the PROTECT IP Act.  She is working with members of Congress and representatives from the technology industry to resolve some of the issues you have raised and hopes a package of changes will be incorporated into the legislation that will address your views to the greatest degree possible.

    Thanks very much,

  • Sent request from San Francisco
  • Just sent in an email, SF Resident here.
  • edited January 2012
Requested a meeting with Senator Feinstein on behalf of California for Internet freedom, at "A time suiting the Senator's convenience on or prior to January 23rd 2012." through the Senator's website meetings form. Will report if I hear or after 72hrs.. Good luck to us all :-) Oakland small business owner / independent developer but meeting requested for SF / Oak or San Jose.
  • I'll be watching this space and joining up with anyone who manages to get a meeting.
  • I'm pretty flexible with my schedule, and I'm willing to join anyone for a meeting in SF office as well...
  • I'd imagine we might only get one meeting per-Senator in CA due to its size. Hopefully we can get Feinstein's ear, her staff told one of our interns that "she doesn't do Town Hall meetings".
  • Will be trying to reach out to Feinstein very soon. Hopefully, this bill will not pass.
  • I'm working on trying to get a meeting with Senator Boxer in LA. Will keep you posted.
  • I'll keep checking here to join a meeting with Boxer
  • Anyone in the IE available? I can request a mtg at the Riverside office.
  • It should be known that anyone near an office should request a meeting. You might not get face time with either of the Senators, but speaking to a member of their staffs is just as helpful. We just need to show Senators that this is a massively unpopular bill, and staff members will pass your opinions up the chain. Just remember to be respectful to the staff! They work extremely hard but aren't in a position to make serious decisions. You want them on your side.
  • Good point StopSOPA-HQ. I went ahead and sent an email anyway.  Will update if I get a response. This is for Boxer's office in Riverside.
  • Glad to see "Sheldon"  and "Brad" requested meetings in L.A.  Count me in!  I'll check this board for updates.  Thanks, Dash
  • Just requested a meeting in SF.
  • Piper if you make appt I will be there.
  • It is really effective just to contact our legislature through online resources:

Where the bill is languishing without many responses from the public.  Voice your opinion with or without a meeting with Boxer or any other representative.  Fill their boxes with messages of Support. Express yourself Here...

  • Altho im not american, if this gets passed then guess what will happen even more so in australia. Dont censor the internet.
  • Requesting a meeting in SF.  Maybe if enough of us request meetings they'll get the picture and have some thing public to discuss this.
  • Dash, Sheldon, and Brad, count me in for the LA meeting...  Hope I can make this date when it happens!
  • We have to stop these old politicians that do not understand new technology. More importantly we need vote them out when voting season comes around!
  • Meeting requested for SF location. Standing by.
  • sent request for vacaville
  • I am interested in joining any meeting in San Francisco.
  • Any one got a meeting in OC or the northern half of SD county?
  • I'm up for a San Francisco/South Bay meeting with either Boxer or Feinstein!
  • Orange County/Los Angeles County/San Diego County meet up available. Sent a request to both Senators
  • Im in Los Angeles California, when/if any of you get a date/time please let me know bigj.mobile AT gmx DOT com
  • @jasoncrawford @spamalious @FaerieRebecca @BigFNj - make sure to keep a watchful eye on this forum. It can take more than a week just to get a response! You could help by calling the office closest to you and requesting a meeting on behalf of California for Internet Freedom. The more they hear that name, the more likely they are to pay attention to meeting requests on behalf of the group!
  • I'm in Berkeley but my bf and I will definitely come in to SF if anyone gets a meeting.
  • I have sent my request and I am looking forward to seeing my representitives and let them Know I feel our right as give to us by the constitution have been trampled enough by people that have no idea what they are doing to our society. As they know they don't abide by the same laws as we do in our everyday lives. They sit on a pedistal and look down on us and take take take but give us very little in return. Stop taking away our rights and leave us decide what's right for ourselves.
  • I'm in San Jose, I sent a request and will keep following thread to see when and where the meeting will be held.
  • I just received a reply asking for a location, which I specified as LA. I will post back if I hear more.

  • This email is to confirm that your scheduling request has been successfully received.  Senator Feinstein’s scheduling team will be in contact with you shortly regarding your request.  In the meantime you may contact the Washington, D.C. Office at (202) 224-3841 if you have any questions. Sincerely, Bryer Davis                 Shaeda AhmadiScheduler                    Deputy Scheduler

this is what i have gotten back so far
  • Anyone get any responses back in the Bay Area?
  • I'm up for attending a meeting in SD during the day (can't do night meetings except on Thursday or Saturday).
  • To Piper
    Per your post:  "Piper

Good point StopSOPA-HQ. I went ahead and sent an email anyway.  Will
update if I get a response. This is for Boxer's office in Riverside."
I am a resident of Riverside County and I am retired and available.  Let me know.

  • I'm willing to attend any meeting as long as the senator will travel to Ventura to meet with the group.  My schedual is so booked with school and work it would be hard to make it to anywhere else in tue state.  For now, i'll just post politely on her web site my opposition to this bill.
  • I just contacted both offices to request meetings in the San Francisco Bay Area.  I have a computer science background and years of experience in the software industry, and now I'm an attorney, so I have experience in both the technical and legal reasons why these bills are a horrible idea - a fact I played up in the email in hopes that it might have some sway.  I'll be sure to check back in when I get a response.
  • Just set up request online
Thank you for your scheduling request. We will be in touch with you shortly.

    Sincerely,

    Dianne Feinstein

    United States Senator, California
  • I'm very interested in attending any meeting to try and remind our representatives of the First Amendment. Please inform me asap.
  • Any meeting managed with Feinstein please let me know and I will be there, rather than flooding her with requests, I'll help whoever needs it to remind her of our constitutional rights!
  • If anyone is in SLO county is willing to arrange a meeting to stop this act, then let me know; I'd be willing to go at it alone but I would prefer to go with a group of supporters in protest of this
  • I emailed both and ask for a meeting the week of the 16th in the morning.  I also said that we were flexible on the date and time and had representatives across the state (i.e. there are a LOT of us) if there is a more convenient day, time, or location.  I will let people know if I get a meeting scheduled.  It would be good if there was an easy way to let everyone know if a meeting gets scheduled.  Can the moderator of this group email us all?  Thanks.
  • Well, I sent an email to a business writer at SF Chronicle, suggesting he interview Senator Feinstein, ask about why she not only supports but is a co-sponsor of SOPA, which is backed by a number of media corporations that aren't based in the US and would have serious adverse consequences for some large ones in the Bay Area.
I don't know why the press allows our representatives to hide in Washington...
I'll send Senator Feinstein a note that I'd like to be kept informed of a meeting time and place if she agrees to meet in San Francisco, without posting another request for a meeting.

can anyone call to follow up to see where these requests are going? In particular, you might ask (politely) how long it ordinarily takes for requests to be processed, just to make it clear that you're not going to let the request go unanswered. thanks!
  • I sent email. Post a lot on Facebook, Google+ and Twitter.
    From San Jose
  • Scheduling Request

Thank you for your scheduling request. We will be in touch with you shortly.

    Sincerely,

    Dianne Feinstein
    United States Senator, California
  • Requested a Google+ Hangout, January 20 8PM PST ... Does anyone have Google connects to possibly get this On Air? ;)
