New Mexico for Internet Freedom

Top Priority for NM: Set up Meetings

There aren't any public events yet, so the most important thing is to get meetings with Senators. Here's what you need to do:

  • Fill out this form and email matt_miller@tomudall.senate.gov to schedule a meeting with Senator Udall
  • Call (505) 346-6601 to schedule a meeting with Senator Bingaman

Be polite and professional, and request a meeting on behalf of New Mexico for Internet Freedom (the folks in this forum) to discuss the PROTECT IP Act and SOPA.  Make it clear that you want to meet with the Senator during the January recess, and that you'll be bringing others from your group.  Have your calendar open when you call, so you can pick a time that works for you.  When finished, post a report-back.

For example: "Hi, my name is ________, I'm with New Mexico for Internet freedom, and I'm calling to request a meeting with Senator _______ during the January recess.  The PROTECT IP vote is happening on January 24th, and I wanted the Senator to understand my concerns before the vote happens."

IMPORTANT: If you do get a meeting, post another message. That way others can join you in your meeting.  If there's any other specific information we should include in this post, message us and we can add it.

  • salut.
un petit post pour vous soutenir depuis l'Europe. Ici aussi la pression du gouvernement devient de plus  en plus dure.
    Bonne journée et bonne année.

  • I spoke with Jeffery Bustmante in Senator Bingamen's office.  There are no appointments available this break, but he suggested he set up a meeting with one of the staff members.  I will follow through on that.

I emailed Senator Udall's office and haven't heard back yet.  Will keep you posted.

  • @djsolomon awesome work. Staff members are valuable as well, if they offer you a meeting with a staff member, you should treat it like a meeting with the Senator.
  • I talked to Jeffery Bustamonto at Senator Bingaman's office.  There are no appointments available to talk with him, but staff is available.  I tried to push him re: the conversation with the senator, but it isn't possible this time around.
  • I've got a
meeting with Senator Udall.  HELP!!!!!!  "ha"  I will need info and
people to join me if possible.  I've never done this before, but this is
an issue I want to pursue to a 'good' conclusion.

    Hello Diane-

     Thank
you for your email. Senator Udall’s January schedule is booked, so I’d
like to have you meet with staff. Are you available on Monday at 2pm to
meet here in our Santa Fe office?

     Sincerely,

     Matt Miller

  • @djsolomon That's awesome! Good job! Would it be possible to quickly e-mail them back and ask if other people can attend the meeting? Ask if they've got a conference room and how many people it holds. That way you won't have to go it alone!

Should you find yourself unable to bring allies, here are some great resources that can help you come up with some talking points:

So is this on?? I like to know, I'll probably go to this meeting. I want to put Democracy in action!! The question is how many people are going? If people might car pool from Albuquerque/Rio Rancho area, I like to know too?
  • @Nomad wait to make any plans until @djsolomon tells us how many people their office can accomodate. More than likely they've got a conference room that can hold up to 10 people, but it might not be possible to book it while the meeting is occurring. Glad to know that you're ready to commute though!
  • So far, nobody's stepped up to go with me.  I'm a bit concerned as I've never been politically active before.  I've got some talking points, but I need bodies!  "ha"  Please respond if you can join me... I really don't want to mess this up!
    Diane
  • @djsolomon I'll go with you.  Does anybody know what the dress code is, if any, for this kind of meeting?

  • @djsolomon - both @nomad and @btobin have offered to go with you! If you click on their user names or their avatars, you'll be brought to page where you can ask them for their e-mails, that way you can privately arrange to meet-up right before the meeting, or discuss the agenda for your meeting.

@btobin - not a black tie affair, but dressing up in your Sunday's finest really helps. As much as we all love fighting the man with our best EFF tee-shirts, formal business atire will earn you more respect.
  • I'm back!! Pleased email people!!! We need to get a plan going and see what questions we're going to ask as a group or individually. For those who might be timid or scared, don't be!! Email asap, I'm free 2morrow. I was planning business casual as the dress code. You do have to look presentable. I really don't think a monkey suit is required because this isn't a court date or some executive job position. Going to send you a message djsolomon and btobin.  If anyone else is coming please speak-up!!! This is some serious sh!t, please join us and exercise your civil liberties.
  • I'm cocked, locked, and ready to rock!!!

Check your profiles!!! My email is there! Djsolomon if you talk to StopSopa-HQ you can give him my email too that is if he's/she's going?
  • Food for thought! It is utterly shameful when you look at how many people are participating in each state respectively. I understand that this is just one of probably many websites to organize the masses to fight this. But look at the numbers, man! This is one reason why, of many, the middle/poor class get's hammered! People just ignore these social issues! Ah, I'll let my Senator/Congressman handle it! They'll handle it alright, listening to companies like the RIAA/MPAA or as some people call it MAFIAA (Music And Film Industry Association of America). MAFIAA doesn't exist, it a joke to combine both the RIAA and MPAA as a single evil entity, like the death star!!! But all joking aside, complacency has taken over America!! America is filled with too many sleepers and slackers!! As a nation how the hell are we suppose to compete globally?? Now that I'm done venting I'll listen to some SomaFm: DroneZone ;-)
  • alright, i'll join you at 2pm tomorrow. perhaps we should meet a good 15 - 30 minutes early to coordinate? also, where should we meet?

    sam.is.in.space[at]gmail[dot]com

    give me a shout.

    cheers.
  • Rise and shine!!
  • We should be meeting today to discuss this and plan, not wait till tomorrow! If some of you live in Santa Fe I understand. Please send me a message as soon as possible and let me know what's going on.

@Nomad @Sam @btobin @djsolomon -- Are you all interested in doing a quick pre-meeting call tomorrow before the meeting with someone from EFF to go over meeting strategies and ask questions? If so, what time would work?

  • @StopSOPA-HQ Me, @Sam, and @Nomad are discussing it right now over e-mail.  I believe the plan so far is to meet up at 1:00 PM tomorrow in a nearby cafe.  That sounds like a good time for a pre-meeting conference.

However, we haven't heard from @djsolomon yet.  I'm hoping if we don't get in touch with her in time, we can go to the office ourselves and say that we're with her, but I guess we'll see soon.

  • Hey everyone, what happened to Diane?? Yes, I will get there early like 2 hrs early. The plan and the message has to come through loud and clear!
  • Where are you Diane??
  • Hell, if anyone wants to talk tonight I'm up for that too!
  • Hi, Public Knowledge has agreed to do a briefing call at noon today. Will that work for people? Please let us know. I can put out a conference call. Is 2pm better, may be harder for PK?
  • By briefing call, do you mean going over talking points before the meeting?  That will work fine.  My phone number is (505) 573 3603.
  • Yes, great. I will give that phone number to Ernesto at PK.

Here are all the flyers or info you need that we have now. http://fightfortheftr.wordpress.com/

    @btobin @Nomad @djSolomon Ernesto at PK says:

Sorry, I'm in the convention center about to start on the CES stuff in 10 minutes.  The two pager PK put together would be most of what I would say.  I would emphasize that Sandia National Labs based in NM said there is a cyber security issue with the bill.

They got onto the bills because they did not realize they were controversial proposals and were sold on this being an easy vote and an easy bill to pass.  So to the effect that they can show that there is substantial concern and opposition and people back home are generally upset with the bill, and knowledgeable about the Jan 24th vote, would go a long way.

Lastly, they just need to make it clear to the Senator they want him to vote no on moving PIPA forward as long as the censorship and cybersecurity pieces stay in (another way to say vote no on cloture).  Make it black and white.
  • Me and @nomad are at a Starbucks down the street from the office.  We haven't heard from @djsolomon or @Sam as of yet.  We'll let you know how things go.

  • Looking forward to hearing how it went!
  • Some good this did us!!! Only me and btobin showed up ready to voice our stance!! Diane/Sam got cold feet and bolted, canceled the meeting without telling us!! Did you know anything about this STOPSOPA-HQ?? At this rate nothing will be accomplished!! If people don't speak up than we get what we deserve!!!!!!!!!! Mailing the points to the Senator doesn't cut the SOPA!! Sayonara!!!
  • Now I really want the 'Nuclear Option" to happen!! Maybe the rest of the sleepers and slackers will awake up and join the rest of us!!!!
  • @Nomad -- terrible! I just got a message from @djsolomon. i asked her to talk to us in the forums and I hope she will. She spoke with the staff and sent concerns too, but was sick and did not go. @Nomad -- did you get a chance to speak with the staff?

I think if people are organizing meetings, they need to report back here or we won't get anywhere. @nomad, the fact that you showed up must mean something -- you did make your opinion known.
  • also this is tiffiniy -- i work at fight for the future and with public knowledge.
  • @Nomad @btobin @djsolomon -- we'll have a new rule that we'll definitely talk to each person who set up the meeting before proceeding. does that work?
  • I apologize to everyone involved in this project. I blew it by not checking the forum.

I'm sure you can understand my frustration that this happened!! It was unprofessional and it made us foolish and unorganized!! I didn't get to speak with anyone because the time slot was canceled!!!! No time, no discussion. textdog obviously this is bigger than all of us. Where are you physically located txtdog?? I want to know more about you. I'm getting highly suspicious of all this!! Going to do my own research on this site.
  • there you are!!!!! I want to talk to you solomon email me I sent you my address.

  • edited January 2012
NOT COOL Diane that we drove there and you didn't tell us you canceled!!! These prehistoric politicians are going to be the end of us. There happy and proud that they don't know how the internet works or what it offers. Like the dinosaurs they need to be extinct, politically!!!
  • Nomad, I haven't gotten your email yet.  Will check later and respond.  I shouldn't be doing this if I don't know what I'm doing.  dj
  • its been in your page for days!!
  • hi all -- I am in Massachusetts. This is our first meeting, so we're learning a lot. I think we can iron out the kinks and it makes me feel terrible that the office didn't let you talk to him. We definitely have to get on the phone before each meeting and with meeting organizer. @djsolomon -- it's ok, you tried. this forum is definitely the place to look again and stay in touch.

@djsolomon -- would you be willing to reschedule and go? and @Nomad @btobin and @sam and others, can you find others to go or go again?

@Nomad @btobin, we owe you a big wreath -- we are going to make awards, and you guys deserve them.

  • edited January 2012
No that's ok, I want a crack at the fools in washington!! I'm not mad at you Diane, OK ;-) I just want those fools in Washington out of the political system. Sam was a no go, now where to be found!
  • Diane I want to meet you and pick your brain, we need people to get to together and as one voice say, get off my grid, sort to speak.
  • edited January 2012
Diane do you live in Los Ranchos?? If you do you live very close to me. We should talk at Flying Star if you do. The only people with horses are in Los Ranchos and Corrales, that's me :-) and besides its nice to make new friends ;-)
  • txtdog you and I know this is not the end of it. this is only the beginning of a very long fight. Do you volunteer or do you work for PK?? Like to know more about it volunteering or working for PK.
  • I'm hungry, getting something to eat, back later tonight.
  • Nomad, I live in Rancho Viejo... have only been in Santa Fe for three months.  I never did get your email, so here's mine again... djsolomon@comcast.net.  I hope to speak to you soon.  Diane
  • Both Anna and Matt are out of the office today, but sent an email asking for a reschedule of the meeting before they return to DC.  Will let you know the outcome.
  • @Nomad @btobin @djsolomon -- what do you think about trying again with Senator Bingaman?
  • Just found this site. I live in Santa Fe, have a flexible schedule, and will be another body in the room. Tell me what's next. Also posted to FB, and did a re-post from the Copyblogger.com site, which has a nice clear discussion to forward to folks who don't understand why this is important.
