Kentucky for Internet Freedom

Top Priority for KY: Set up Meetings

Rand Paul has scheduled a Town Hall meeting in Murray, KY. He is an opponent of PIPA. Can you go, thank him, and ask him how you can help him defeat the bill?

  • Wednesday, Jan 11th, @ 12:30 PM CFSB Center at Murray State University 1401 State Route 121 North  Murray, KY  42071-3352
We still need meetings, especially w/ Mitch McConnell:

  • Call (502) 582-6304 to meet with Senator McConnell, who has no public position on the bill yet.
  • Call 502-582-5341 to meet with Senator Paul, a staunch opponent of PIPA and committed to filibustering the bill.

Be polite and professional, and request a meeting on behalf of Kentucky for Internet Freedom (the folks in this forum) to discuss the PROTECT IP Act and SOPA.  Make it clear that you want to meet with the Senator during the January recess, and that you'll be bringing others from your group.  Have your calendar open when you call, so you can pick a time that works for you.  When finished, post a report-back.

For example: "Hi, my name is ________, I'm with Kentucky for Internet freedom, and I'm calling to request a meeting with Senator _______ during the January recess.  The PROTECT IP vote is happening on January 24th, and I wanted the Senator to understand my concerns before the vote happens."

IMPORTANT: If you do get a meeting, post another message. That way others can join you in your meeting.  If there's any other specific information we should include in this post, message us and we can add it.

  • Oh lord.
    • "Call (502) 582-6304 to meet with Senator McConnell, who has no pubic position on the bill yet."
  • Thanks for catching the typo. Our faces are red.
  • Is there not a way to bombard them with many emails, telling them just how many of us would like to see their vote be against this?

You'll not find many that will, or can meet with the Senators due to one reason or another.

    Thank you
       Hawk
  • @nom @Hawk_Prather there's nothing like an in-person to convince a Senator about a bill, really. can you try?
  • What about those of us that want to participate, but can't get in to see the Senator?

Do not stop at just one junction, when you (We) have many other avenues available to you (Us)
  • I will call and make my opinions known. However, I don't have an automobile to go anywhere. Yet, if either come to my town before the 24th, I'll make sure I get to have a moment with them, if I can.
  • I called and made my opinions known. Has anyone attempted to set up a meeting yet? I will check back here later and if no one has, then I suggest Wednesday, January 18th.
  • @Evolvingmedia Would you be willing to try setting up the meeting yourself? As soon as you do, you'll probably get a lot of people coming out of the woodwork support you.
  • I called, expressed I would like a meeting, and was redirected to scheduling. She was currently out of office, but I left a voicemail with Angie. I'm a 20 year old timid and quiet student who made this call, and people scare the hell out of me. Don't be scared to make the call.
  • I emailed Senator McConnell here:
http://www.mcconnell.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?p=ContactForm#form_2a1cd1e7-c5a2-44ae-8451-1a352299c051. I told him that I would not vote nor support any politician who threatens my livelihood (I work online) and urged him to stand agains SOPA and PIPA. I hope it helps.
  • @Evolvingmedia @Anniengma - Bravo! Keep up the good work, and remember that you have a ton of people ready and waiting to support you.
  • Just got off the phone with McConnell's office… ditto Annienygma: Send via http://www.mcconnell.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?p=ContactForm#form_2a1cd1e7-c5a2-44ae-8451-1a352299c051 - DIRECTLY SEND TO McConnell!  The bill's title seriously makes a fool out of politicians… it puts them in a corner (from the sounds of it, wouldn't ANYone want to appear that they are AGAINST piracy!) But we have to let them know that this is so suave that it can make a fool out of them if they are uninformed - AND TAKE DOWN THOUSANDS OF BUSINESSES!

I'm propose video responses with links to them posted in the comments. (be professional. I have to assume they are ignorant of the damage this can cause!)
  • I just sent off an email to McConnell and I hope it helps him realize how this bill is so unconstitutional. Absolutely ridiculous.
  • Hi everyone!

I'm not sure if this is the proper place for posting the following information, but I thought it might be worth a shot. Case in point, Haley King (a fellow Kentuckian) has organized a petition with www.change.org concerning SOPA and PIPA. Specifically, her petition is encouraging Google and Facebook to participate in an internet blackout (the same blackout Wikipedia has agreed to participate in) so as to draw attention to the bills.

As of this posting, the petition has reached over 2,000 signatures and Google has notified Haley that the petition has, if nothing else, caught their interest. No word from Facebook, however - yet.

Again, assuming this is a proper place to link to Haley's petition, let's work on upping the signature count so that Google and Facebook might be persuaded to participate in the blackout!

    Link to the petition:

  • wanna know what i sent to my Senator in an email.

why pass a bill that would kill the internet for billions of people hard working people to the home business that needs the internet to have a life and work for there family please hear me out and vote against POPA & PIPA its not right taking the internet from billions of people so that the movie & music Inc. is happy please say *NO* to POPA & PIPA please don't vote the bill in lets fight against it america is BORN FREE FREEDOM OF SPEECH & FREEDOM to vote why take our freedom we the people are having it hard as it is.
  • @Janova Please spell check before you send something. Even though when you're upset it's easy to make mistakes, people will disregard what you say sometimes (sadly) just because you appear somehow "uneducated." Typos are small, but you want to be as professional as possible. This goes for anyone else who is doing so, please be courteous whilst still voicing your opinion loud and clear. Think "Give Me Liberty" speech by Patrick Henry, not a youtuber who is babbling on.
  • Once again in the mother of all democracies our government seems to be sinking to the level of countries that do not allow freedom with this bill. The internet is one of the greatest freedoms and tools to come along for the public in the history of our country. There are plenty of bad things allowed to exist on the onternet but the good far out ways the bad. Parents should be responsible for being the internet screeners in their homes and with their  children. Giving too young a child full and open unattended access is wrong . However we do not want the government screening what they want us our children and all americans to be able to sreen for themselves. The internet unlike radio and tv is a media that was created and designed to be free ald fill unabated access for all. If the U.S. Government starts screening and controlling the internet they will be no bettter than the Chinese government or any other society that tells their citizens what they can read, see, view and have access to media wise.
  • I sincerely hope that Rand Paul creates some sort of headlines or even more awareness about how ridiculously unconstitutional, threatening and counter-intuitive this frightening piece of legislation actually is. I respect that man now more than I ever thought I would. Good man.
  • Keep it up, everyone! We've had a huge impact over the past 24 hours, and we need to use that momentum to reach those Senators who aren't responding to their constituents' concerns. Call, email, fax, and (optimally) go to your Senators' local offices and ask for meetings, preferably under the banner of "Kentucky for Internet Freedom." That'll let the Senators' staffs know that there are a lot of you out there, that you're all working together, and that they therefore cannot possibly hope to ignore you. Stay strong out there - we're making progress!
  • Still no reply from Senator McConnell (sad) but thankfully replies from both Senator Paul & Congressman Yarmuth came back with news about how they will fight both bills !!!!!!!
  • YES! Congressman Yarmuth is a small victory! I am trying my damnedest to get through at McConnell's office as I speak
