Michigan for Internet Freedom: meetings with Senator Levin on 1/17 and 1/19 in Grand Rapids!

Meetings with Senator Levin's staff on 1/17 at 3pm, 1/19 at 2pm

@joshf has set up a meeting with Senator Levin's central staff in Grand Rapids on Tuesday the 17th, and @heyandy889 has set up another meeting on Thursday the 19th. Both need your support! Post back here, and get in touch with the appropriate person directly if you can go! Meanwhile, keep on requesting those meetings, so both Senators know how large the opposition to PIPA really is. Here's what you need to do:

  • Call (616)-975-0052 to schedule a meeting with Senator Stabenow, who has no public position on PIPA yet.
  • Fax (313)226-6948, ATTN: Kathy to schedule a meeting with Senator Levin, then call (313)-226-6020 to follow up.

Be polite and professional, and request a meeting on behalf of Michigan for Internet Freedom (the folks in this forum) to discuss the PROTECT IP Act and SOPA.  Make it clear that you want to meet with the Senator during the January recess, and that you'll be bringing others from your group.  Have your calendar open when you call, so you can pick a time that works for you.  When finished, post a report-back.

For example: "Hi, my name is ________, I'm with Michigan for Internet freedom, and I'm calling to request a meeting with Senator _______ during the January recess.  The PROTECT IP vote is happening on January 24th, and I wanted the Senator to understand my concerns before the vote happens."

IMPORTANT: If you do get a meeting, post another message. That way others can join you in your meeting.  If there's any other specific information we should include in this post, message us and we can add it.

  • Hello,

I would love to be a part of this, however I live on campus with no vehicle. If anyone is meeting with Senators Stabenow or Levin and is willing to pick me up in Ann Arbor, I would gladly join. Please email me at sabob@umich.edu if this is a possibility.

all: here's an email I wrote to Brent

Hi, Brent. My name is Nate Shiff, I'm a super-senior at WMU in Kalamazoo. I'd definitely be down for going to Lansing with you.  I'm hoping to corral a few of my friends here at Western to come, too. One of them should have a car, but I also have a car in Ann Arbor. My parents live there. :-)

OK, rock on, dude. If for some reason the ride doesn't work out, maybe you can twist the arm of a friend to drive you, or maybe you can catch a ride on the http://us.megabus.com/ (not sketch, my sister's done it)

  • I'd love to be involved with this, I'm sure I could get some of my friends involved, also.

    Keep me posted: garrett.r.nichols@gmail.com

  • I just spoke with Mary over at Sen. Stabenow's office to request a meeting. She took down my information and said she would have her colleague reach out to me. I will keep everyone posted!
  • @margcass That's great! Keep us updated!

@garrett1415 @heyandy889 @brentsabo - we need you guys to contact the Senator's offices and request a meeting on behalf of Michigan for Internet Freedom. The more their offices hear that name, the better chance you ahve of being granted a meeting you can all attend!
  • I will contact the Senators' offices on Monday.  I'll be driving from Grand Rapids and can hold up to 3 passengers.
  • Found a HowStuffWorks on how to fax. Assuming I'm not the only one who's never sent a fax? XD
  • @heyandy889 - hard to believe Congress wants to regulate the inner workings of the internet when they're still using faxes. We'd recommend http://www.gotfreefax.com/ as a free faxing service.
  • I know China does this and is not right. People there do not like it. Can't believe that this country which has the freedom of speech and have our rights are doing this. Is this America or what??? This is how our president and rest of the government are ruining America.  They want to take our rights away and want us to say what they want us to say and take control of everything. This is NOT right and has got to stop now!
  • Well I will call imediately and I do live in Lansing about ten minutes from the capitol so I will be a valuable resource to anyone trying to meet with the senator.
  • oh btw I have multiple e-mail addresses... Just connect with me under..

Mary took my information as well and said she'd request a meeting with Sen. Stabenow.  I told her to expect "up to four" people depending on everyone's availability; I hope that wasn't too far off base.
  • Does MIF have a fax #?
  • I sent a fax using the free fax service, which sent me a confirmation.  I also called Sen. Levin's office to verify receipt of the fax.  The receptionist transferred me to the scheduler, which turned out to be Kathy's voicemail.  I left her a message with my contact information.

I just called Senator Stabenow's office. Their office hours are 9-5 Monday-Friday, so I got the voicemail. As requested by the recording, I left my name, the spelling of my name, and my phone number and a brief message. A little bit of stuttering, lol. It feels awkward for me to call these folks. I suppose I have nothing to worry about, since they have no idea who I am, so they won't judge me. Plus, I'm with Michigan for Internet Freedom!

edit: @Stop_Censorship @joshf Right on! Could you please post here if anything happens or changes?

btw y'all, I'm in Kalamazoo, so I'd definitely be hip to drive or hop aboard if anyone's coming from Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, or even Ann Arbor (my hometown).
  • This is empowering! I felt nervous about sending a fax and calling Senator Levin's office, but the woman on the phone was very helpful! She will tell Kathy, whose job it is to schedule meetings, that we are worried about the upcoming PROTECT-IP Act, and that a handful of us seek a meeting with Senator Levin.

The woman on the phone also asked, "Didn't you send one [a fax] earlier? We got one when we came into the office today." I simply answered, "That was probably one of the people I'm affiliated with." That seemed satisfactory to her.
  • Kathy from Sen. Levin's office just returned my call and said that the Senator's schedule is full through the recess.  She's going to have someone from the Grand Rapids office call me to set up an appointment here in Grand Rapids.
  • Alright! That is what Kathy told me, too. Maybe we can find a phone number for the GR office?
  • @joshf @heyandy889 - you guys should DEFINITELY follow up either today or tomorrow w/ the Grand Rapids office. A meeting w/ staff is an excellent opportunity. Let us know how that goes, and make sure to tune into our information call tomorrow at Noon in case your meeting is scheduled for later this week! More info on that can be found on either our Wordpress, or in the sidebar of the forums --->
  • Yeah I'll definitely be on the call tomorrow; I'm a web programmer not a lobbyist so I'll need some help with the talking points.  I'll give the GR office a follow-up call tomorrow morning if I don't hear from them today.

Andy, what's your schedule like, in case they call me first?  Would you need a ride up to GR?
  • Actually I won't be able to make that call, I have a meeting already I can't get out of.  @StopSOPA-HQ is there another way to connect with yall if I do get an appointment finalized?
  • @joshf - thats okay, if you message us a time thats good for you we can try and accomodate.
  • @joshf - it won't be with Ernest Falcon though

Just to reiterate, I believe that any meeting in GR will be with some sort of representative to Senator Levin, not Senator Levin himself. I'll call tomorrow.
  • Hey @heyandy889,

Please let me if you succeed in scheduling a meeting. I'm from ann arbor and want to join in. You can email me at rsharanyan@gmail.com

    Thanks!
  • I just called and talked to Paul Troost, West Michigan Regional Director for Sen. Levin.  We have a meeting scheduled for Tuesday the 17th at 3pm at the Federal Building (the address Andy listed above).

The Federal Building has TSA-style security so no cell phones, etc. are allowed inside.
  • edited January 2012
@joshf @heyandy889 @Sharanyan - congrats on getting a meeting! If you guys have time, Public Knowledge's Legislative Director is going to be briefing people on strategies for all the meetings at 12PM EST Today!
Also, we just created a Facebook event for the meeting: http://www.facebook.com/events/163325357103347. Let us know if you want any of the wording changed, and feel free to distribute it widely; the greater the show of support you bring with you, the stronger your overall impact is likely to be.
  • If anyone can get in on the call today at noon (I can't) please try to find out:

    1.  What main talking points should be brought up?
    2.  Sen. Levin is on the Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee; should I stress the disproportionate impact to small businesses or just leave that point alone?
    3.  Sen. Levin voted for the DMCA.  Are there materials available that describe how PIPA specifically differs from DMCA?
    4.  What supporting materials should I bring or reference?
    5.  Short of the Senator's commitment to vote against the act (unlikely), what should I consider a successful meeting outcome?

    Thanks,

    Josh
  • Nice work, all! I can commit to attending the meeting. I believe GR is about 45 min from Kzoo, so I can probably rally a few souls from my Computer Science dept.

@joshf To the right in the sidebar --> there are some ideas for talking points. Personally, I'll bring a few copies of PROTECT-IP's text. To me, that's the bottom line as far as what the bill does and what it doesn't do.
  • edited January 2012
@joshf - just got off the call with Ernesto and asked your questions. Here were his answers:

    1. The biggest talking point this election cycle is "jobs". Everyone wants more jobs, no one wants fewer jobs.

    2. See above. This is definitely a valid point (given that small web startups do not have the resources to monitor user-submitted content in the manner that this legislation seems to mandate)

    3. PIPA is not only radically different, it threatens to BREAK the DMCA outright: http://www.facebook.com/notes/the-technology-liberation-front/why-sopa-threatens-the-dmca-safe-harbor/10150365499216218?ref=nf (Not sure who this group is, but the arguments are sound).

    4. Take a look at these: https://fightfortheftr.wordpress.com/flyers-info-sheets-badges-infographics-for-meeting-with-your-senator/ Even more powerful, of course, are personal statements from other people in the state, whose lives will be directly affected by the passage of the legislation.

    5. Simply having taken the time to go in (with as many others as you can gather) will be a huge success. It will show Levin's representative just how strong your opposition is, that you aren't alone, and that this isn't an issue that he cannot shove under the table. Even if you only get to meet with a staffer, staffers pass along what they hear, and "getting information up the chain of command" was one of the most important aims stressed by the PK people.

Great job so far, and keep it up!
  • Yay, got a return call from Sen. Stabenow's office. :-D No meeting, just a follow-up to get number of people (I said a handful) and where I'm coming from (Kalamazoo). So, hopefully they will call me back.
  • Can someone post the location of those meetings?

    I'd like to show up.

  • Thank You!
  • FYI: Senators  Carl Levin and John McCain authored S. 1867, otherwise known as the National Defense Authorization Act bill.

This bill was passed just before the recess without the amendment proposed in this video.

Imagine how these two bills can work in tandem.

    @Michael_1

I want to steer us towards a focus on PROTECT-IP. Though the hype about the NDAA is alarming, the name of our group is Michigan for Internet Freedom. We scheduled a meeting under that premise.

Levin seems to think that the hype is unfounded. On the very front of his website, he says "The Detainee Provisions in the NDAA: Much of what has been said and written about the detainee provisions is simply wrong. If this bill did what some people claim it does, I would have opposed it myself."
    Elaboration from Levin: http://levin.senate.gov/newsroom/press/release/the-detainee-provisions-in-the-national-defense-authorization-act-for-fy-2012
Full text of the NDAA, S.1867: http://www.opencongress.org/bill/112-s1867/text

This may look like I'm dismissing your concern, but that's not my intention. I think that this might not be the optimal forum for your concern, and I also think that there's further investigation to be done about the NDAA and any involvement on the part of Sen. Levin.
  • I really would like to be there in Grand Rapids but I have another appointment in Alma.  Is there anything else that I can participate in to help put an end to this censorship?
  • @RDupuy2001 Schedule another meeting! XD I recommend continuing to investigate and learn about specifically how the bill threatens DNS and why that's bad. Researching politics a continuous process. I don't think that any of us can ever know it all. Beyond investigating, there's an awesome Take Action Checklist at http://americancensorship.org/ Peace, and let's maintain an open Internet!
  • I am going to call Senator Stabenow about SOPA/PIPA Act.
  • edited January 2012

@StopSOPA-HQ Alright! Scheduled a 2nd meeting with our helper, Paul Troost. He signed me up for next Thursday, January 19th at 2:00pm. Same place at the Federal building.

Note: You can't bring cell phones into the building. It is a court house, and we'll be walking through security. So, definitely don't bring weapons, either. Bad news bears.

Solid. He says that 4 people are fine, which is what we have going to the meeting on Tuesday. Paul says, "It's a small office." I'm not really trying to push any boundaries, here. I think that being understanding of constraints on their end might help our cause.

  • Are there any network engineers or people who work for internet service providers or other professional credentials going?
Not to dismiss anyone's best intentions, but getting people from the industry will have a bigger impact.
Can we have a roll call of who is showing up, and at the very least, their credentials?
  • I would count as both a Network Engineer and a Michigan based web entrepreneur.   Unfortunately I have commitments on that day but I will call and add my taxpaying constituent hiring views to the pot.
  • josh, i live in grand rapids and could probably make it to join if you need more people. how do i get ahold of you?
  • I am a Systems guy. I have to be on site for a current customer for my company. I wouldn't mind helping out in some other fashion, but I cannot go off to Lansing in person. Let me know what I can do to help otherwise.

    Thx,

    JH

  • @perfectdisplay click on either @joshf or @heyandy889 's nametags to bring up their personal profiles. They should have emails attached to those; try sending them an email directly!
  • @JHUnlimited - I would suggest getting in contact with @joshf and @heyandy889 via e-mail. Click on their profiles to find their addresses. It would be awesome if you could explain in very simple terms how the DNS blocking system will work, and how it will create an unsafe internet.

Alternatively, you could write a litter detailing your concerns and give it to either of those two for delivery.
  • I'm playing phone tag now with Mary Judnedge (sp?) from what I assume is Sen. Stabenow's Grand Rapids office, based on the 616 area code.  The message she left sounds like she wants to just have a phone conversation; I'm going to see if I can't wrangle us a face to face meeting.
  • Also, I'm a former NOC guy and I'm still in the web business.  I can explain the DNS issues in terms the Senators' staffers will understand.
  • Ill go the 17th and the 19th, and Id be happy to meet with Sen Stabenow.  Additionally, Ill attempt to rally some Calvin students.
  • I would really like to attend one of the currently scheduled meetings but I have class and an appointment during them. Maybe if we get a meeting with Stabenow or Peters we can aim for Wednesday or Friday morning? I will call their offices later today and see if I can get any info about a meeting.
