Georgia for Internet Freedom: Come to a meet-up on Jan. 20th in Atl!

Top Priority for GA: Set up Meetings

@rfair404 has invited Senators Chambliss and Isaacson to a meeting on Friday, Jan. 20th at 6pm at the Park Tavern next of Piedmont Park in Atlanta. If you can attend please e-mail him: [rfair404 @ gmail]!

  • Call (770)-763-9090 to meet with Chambliss, a co-sponsor of PIPA.
  • Call (770) 661-0999 to meet with Senator Isaacson, a co-sponsor of PIPA.

Be polite and professional, and request a meeting on behalf of Georgia for Internet Freedom (the folks in this forum) to discuss the PROTECT IP Act and SOPA.  Make it clear that you want to meet with the Senator during the January recess, and that you'll be bringing others from your group.  Have your calendar open when you call, so you can pick a time that works for you.  When finished, post a report-back.

For example: "Hi, my name is ________, I'm with Gorgia for Internet freedom, and I'm calling to request a meeting with Senator _______ during the January recess.  The PROTECT IP vote is happening on January 24th, and I wanted the Senator to understand my concerns before the vote happens."

IMPORTANT: If you do get a meeting, post another message. That way others can join you in your meeting.  If there's any other specific information we should include in this post, message us and we can add it.

  • I have contacted Senator Isaacson's office to schedule a meeting. I will report back as soon as I hear back from his office.
  • Awesome! Make sure to follow up in the next few days with a phone call and let us know what kind of response you get!
  • I would love to attend this as well... I have been doing a music magazine online for 20 years now, and would be a good vehicle to get someone to understand the publicity aspect of things for bands that do not have a large voice worldwide... I could shed some light on how internet music magazines work, and how some bands gain tremendous exposure from the work we music journalists do behind the scenes...
  • I will be happy to attend as well. Please keep us posted ! Thanks!
  • We need to pay close attention to this latest power grab in the name of "protecting us"
  • I'll attend as well, and hopefully bring some UGA folks.  Let us know when the meeting is.
  • Just Called mr. Chambliss - The Secretary took my message not to support the internet bill.  She also says the Senator is filled up with meeting for every hour and day during the recess.  :/ However today is the day she is composting a list of calls to the Senator and will put it on his desk.

Also called Isaacson's office - No one picked up and then it kicked me out ? is that the right number?

It would be good to have on this page an out line of what to say when you do talk to someone about the bill - such as this bill is going to hurt American civil liberties and the freedom of speech.. also try to link to http://www.opencongress.org and the people in question.  This way you can see their voting history.

    Thanks for standing up!
  • @tmack78 (770) 661-0999 is the number listed on Sen. Isackson's website. Just called them, got routed to the State scheduler who said that the Senator's schedule is jam packed during the recess, but that they've been getting "a ton of calls about Georgians for Internet Freedom" and that the Senator is drafting a letter to the group's members. I think that if we keep calling and requesting meetings that they might have to schedule one for you guys.

IMPORTANT: She said Senator Isakson is leaving for DC on the 18th or 19th, so request meetings before then.

We're getting through to them. Good work Georgia!!!
  • Ill be there please update with a meeting time and place.
  • I asked to be called back by both offices, and I only got back a "canned" response from Isackson.  They both officially co-sponsor the bill. I will attend any meeting that can be set up.
  • If anyone manages to get a meeting, I'll definitely come along.
  • I'll attend too! Just let me know what day/time/place and I'll rearrange anything I need to.
  • I have a story to tell either senator if there was a way to see either of them. Last week we were hit with a DMCA take down on our website. We are a recipe website and recipes aren't even copyrightable, not to mention that the infringement wasn't even close if they were protect able. We believe through our sources that this was a result of us hurting their cookbook business. It was only one page but under SOPA/PIPA they could have taken our whole site down and basically destroy our business. I will call both of their offices Monday as well but if anyone does get an audience I would like to share our example of what really can happen to a business like ours in Georgia with this bill. Since they are going back to Washington early if anyone in this organization can suggest how to get an audience with either of them in Washington I'd be happy to fly there on my own dime.
  • Hello I called Saxby Chambliss Office and they told me I could meet with a representative as it gets closer and they received lots of calls.  Both senators are sponsors of this Bill.  If there is a meeting please let me know I and a few others will show up
  • I called Mr. Chambliss' office and was told that ALL of Mr. Chambliss' scheduling is done via fax ATNN: Audra Hill 202-224-4720. Anyone have a fax machine?

I did ask that my message be delivered to Mr. Chambliss - which was specifically that his support of PIPA and SOPA could put me and thousands of others out of business.
  • @SoEngaged any chance you can call to follow up? anyone else?

  • I really hope the nuclear blackout happens.  We really need to take a stand
  • @SoEngaged, and everyone else: if the Senators' offices say that you have submit meeting requests by fax, give this web-based service a try: http://www.gotfreefax.com/
  • WTF. this is one of the greatest and resourceful web-site I have ever seen...and all the information which is on the site, was made for PEOPLE. internet must be open source, accessible for any sort of information and especially ART, that why it was created in the beginning, it had this purpose... And what we have now?! Internet controlled by Powers and biased information. you have my vote!!!
  • I sent a fax to Sen Chambliss office (as listed above) and have yet to hear a response. I will be at any meeting - on the off chance we can actually get one. The next step I would take, would be to post their office numbers on the internet and ask citizens to target their offices for a call-in campaign.
  • PS If you want to email Mr Isaacson - do so at: toni_brown@isaacson.senate.gov  and politely request a meeting. They're being inundated today, so make your request known.
  • Also: Call each office as listed and make sure you leave a message as a citizen that you oppose PIPA and SOPA.
  • @cinnimongirl Bravo - keep up the good work! Don't be afraid to keep calling back until you get an answer about a meeting - that'll let them know how serious you are.

Hey everyone, I just called Isaacson's office and identified myself as being with Georgia for Internet freedom. The person I spoke with said that they would have the person in charge of scheduling give me a call. Sorry, I didn't get the name of the person I spoke with. I would encourage anyone posting here to try and post names of people they speak with.

When I try again, I'll be sure to get a name.

Update: Just received a return call From Isaacson's office requesting my email address. They say that they will email me about a meeting. I spoke with Libby. Fingers crossed!

I've also contacted Saxby Chambliss' office and was told to make a request online at http://chambliss.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/scheduling. PLEASE everyone on this site—fill out this form and make a request. @StopSOPA-HQ mentioned being professional and polite. We won't be taken seriously if we don't act respectful and professional.

I spoke with Sarah at Chambliss' office
  • What day and time are you guys planning to meet with the Senators?
  • Honestly, I was planning on being flexible to the Senator's available dates, but if we can come to a consensus on a date best for everyone here—we can certainly request that date.
  • I recommend that we schedule the meeting on Thursday January 19th in Atlanta somewhere.

I have contacted both senators' offices and requested the meeting.

Lets set a time for a rally and I will spread the word to members of the Atlanta Blogging and web design professionals that I know.

  •

Let's keep this moving along. These two Senators have only, since 2008, had a constituency with much of a voice.

I don't think either have had to consider an aggressive constituency during an election.  They both function as unquestioned authorities.

It is going to take a major push for them to listen.  Push!

    Senator Johnny Isakson.

  • We could host a live event on Friday the 20th or Monday the 23rd and invite the senators to attend. I am sure that there will be an outpouring of support from the web community and online publishers in Atlanta.  Anyone else interested?

I'll just throw out a meeting time and place. 6:00 pm on Friday January 20th at Piedmont Park. I will ask Park Tavern to provide space that will hold about 200 people. Please join me.

  • @rfair404 Excellent strategy! Once you have that space reserved, we'll push out announcements on the fftf Facebook/Twitter streams (if you'd like). Thanks for taking charge here!
  • done: I am already pushing the information out to my meetups. I'll request the space for the afternoon and evening.
  • Great! Here's the fftf Facebook event link: http://www.facebook.com/events/282493521808558
  • These guys both voted for the NDAA, including the indefinite detention of American citizens by the military clause.  Good luck in getting them to stay away from SOPA, these guys both need to be sent packing, and that's coming from someone who voted for them.
  • @PapaSquirrel its worth the effort. I don't know that these Senators have a good understanding of the bills. If enough people show their concern, maybe it will make them look closer at what they are voting for.
  • I'll be there - bringing my husband because he understands that these laws are terrible for our country (even if he only watches the news and sports forums online)  Thank you for organizing! See you Friday.

I've been thinking a lot lately about freedom and control, and I’m leaning to
believe that freedom is becoming an illusion in this country. Having the
ability to control your world is one of the greatest things; I strongly believe
    that control is good.

But there is a downside to being in control when it involves trying to control
other people, because other people don't want to be controlled by you any more
than you want to be controlled by other people…specially governments.

  • I called both Senators and also posted this to my main web site:

    http://www.fencing.net/5091/sopa-why-you-should-call-your-senator-to-oppose-it/

  • It is my understanding that a handwritten letter sent certified mail is considered the most effective method of communication other than a personal visit.  As they have little time for one on one visits these days I would recommend this as well as trying to get a visit.  A well written, personal letter, polite, concise, to the point and specific with regards to the issue is held in high regard.  Very few people are willing to take the time to write an actual letter so it reveals the level of importance you hold in regard to this bill.  And this bill is far more crucial than we can even begin to realize.  Within it are held the future of our right to free speech.
  • Mr Chambliss: Thanks for the oportunity to let my opinion be made. I find the passage of this bills apalling and disgusting, I speak for many users of Craiglist and we see this as a slippery slope that will allow special interests greater manipulation of the market place. As a champion of the free market please dont allow passage of SOPA and PIPA let the free market be the decider, as a side comment I should sya the Republican Party as of late has made many embarrasing mistakes (like in december) please dont make anotherone. Respectfully... Oscar Gil
  • Put out an online alert for the senators via twitter or facebook, technology can make it very easy to track them down grabbing breakfast or a coffee somewhere.
  • Have we still not received a date back from the representatives?  I can get lots of college students from all over Georgia to meet somewhere.
  • @kerri2012 YES the event is at Park Tavern on Friday the 20th at 6pm.

We have invided the Senators to attend but you too should ask them.

If you are interested in helping PLEASE email me at rfair404 at (google's mail service) or drop me a call at 4049540429
  • Whenis the meeting time and where is it? I'll definately call both offices and also, could you tell me what sites will be going down tomorrow?
  • Do we have any updates on the Attendance of our Senators? I plan to invite students from Georgia State for the 20th in Piedmont Park.
  • just FYI.....news from Marco Rubio (hopefully this will get the ball rolling....)

Marco Rubio, the incredible Senator from
Florida has  announced he is no longer supporting the Protect-IP bill in the Senate.
Here is what Senator Rubio just had to say:

"In recent weeks, we’ve heard from
many Floridians about the anti-Internet piracy bills making their way
through Congress. On the Senate side, I have been a co-sponsor of the
PROTECT IP Act because I believe it’s important to protect American
ingenuity, ideas and jobs from being stolen through Internet piracy,
much of it occurring overseas through rogue websites in China. As a
senator from Florida, a state with a large presence of artists, creators
and businesses connected to the creation of intellectual property, I
have a strong interest in stopping online piracy that costs Florida
    jobs.

However, we must do this while simultaneously promoting an open,
dynamic Internet environment that is ripe for innovation and promotes
    new technologies.

Earlier this year, this bill passed the Senate
Judiciary Committee unanimously and without controversy. Since then,
we've heard legitimate concerns about the impact the bill could have on
access to the Internet and about a potentially unreasonable expansion of
the federal government's power to impact the Internet. Congress should
listen and avoid rushing through a bill that could have many unintended
    consequences.

Therefore, I have decided to withdraw my support for the
Protect IP Act. Furthermore, I encourage Senator Reid to abandon his
plan to rush the bill to the floor. Instead, we should take more time to
address the concerns raised by all sides, and come up with new
legislation that addresses Internet piracy while protecting free and
    open access to the Internet.

If you have the chance, call Senator Rubio’s office and thank him for what he has done.  His number is 202-224-3041.
  • Hi All: for clarification: the meetup is Friday the 20th. The event runs from 4 to 9 pm with the major "content" starting at 6.

The Senators have not confirmed. I have called, and requested them attend.

You can email both Senators, though I suggest this late in the game that you  also CALL them and ask to talk to whoever does their Scheduling.

Also Please join our "official" meetup group and RSVP so we have n accurate head count:http://www.meetup.com/stop-PIPA-SOPA-legislation/events/47693802/

  • I called both offices and they took down my name and number and promised to call me back. I think we should just keep calling!
  • But I don't think they will get back to me anytime soon!
