Cali for Net Freedom: Senators are ignoring us, so let's schedule random drop-ins everywhere!

  • I'd love to join a meeting in LA (or nearby), if someone manages to schedule one.
  • @chi_ho @eml - can you guys possibly follow up on your requests either today or tomorrow? Being persistant really helps your requests.
  • @GetSource - It would help if you requested meetings under the California for Internet Freedom banner with both of your Senators at the LA office. The more they hear that group name, the more likely they are to set up a group meeting!
  • I live in San Diego, but would be willing to burn a vacation day to travel to Los Angeles for a meeting with Barbara Boxer. I am a web developer who has been professionally employed in the industry since 1996. It looks like we need a group of people to request a meeting with her.

    Anyone else up for this?
  • @ Piperwallace_clan_man
I'm in rside.  If you get a meeting, I'm there.  But, I'm a student, so my schedule is a little more rough.
  • I have sent an email to congress in the State of California.
  • Request for meeting sent to both Senators for Sacramento. Will attend any SF Bay Area meeting if granted one.
  • @tywebb @standingup2010 Thanks! Be sure to follow up if you don't get a response; that will show the Senators' offices how serious you are, and make you impossible to ignore.

I'm from Michigan and I will be in Santa clara from the 21st of Jan. If someone succeeds in scheduling a meeting please let me know, I want to join you guys.

You can find me at rsharanyan@gmail.com. thanks!
  • If anyone has a meeting set up in the LA/OC/SanBern/Inland Empire area, I'm down and I'm sure I could bring at least 3 other people with me, if not more.  I'll be checking back on this board so if anyone gets a meeting set up, please let us know!
  • edited January 2012
@lopezdca If you have 3+ other people already lined up, why not request a meeting yourself? It's helpful to have as many people as possible submit requests, so that the Senators' offices know just how widespread the opposition to this bill really is. So if you have a few free minutes, please go for it!
  • I just submitted a request to meet with Sen. Boxer. I will get back if I hear anything. The more requests the better right!? I have never done anything like this before!
  • Submitted a meeting request for Newport Beach
  • I'll come for the sf meeting
  • Doesn't look like anyone has a San Francisco meeting yet? I can request one but I don't have a group. I just asked a bunch of friends if they would join me so I can list a bunch of names on the form when I sign up.

Anyone else doing this, feel free to list my name: Jason Crawford.
  • Please count me in for LA.  maria.kermath@gmail.com
  • Just put in a request San Francisco January 18th. Will let you know.
  • @jasoncrawford @Maja - There are lots of people who are also looking to come to a meeting in SF (like @Alexgrande for instance) or LA. It would help if either of you requested meetings in those cities. Alternatively, next time you're by either of their offices, just drop in and tell the staff how you feel! We're really just looking to get a lot of physical presence at both Senator's offices. Obviously panned meetings with ranking staff members are amazing, but quick drop-bys have a major impact!
  • Let us know if an LA meeting gets set up.
  • Requested.
  • Trying to schedule a meeting for San Diego.  Down with SOPA!!
  • Just asked for a meeting.

    Hi there

I am very interested to meet with the responsible people to talk about this SOPA vote and the effort that drives it.

I would like to state my personal concerns with it as well as principal problems I have with restricting people.

I am in touch with "California for Internet Freedom " and we all
together have what I consider a strong and diverse group with innovative
    ideas and views.

If you would be so nice and consider meeting with me/us BEFORE the vote in 2 weeks, that would be much appreciated.

  • @maricela26, @Dustin, @lovelybison, @onosway, @Brett -- THANK YOU!!!  Comment here when/if you get a response.
  • Message sent to both Feinstein and Boxer.

    Boxer Message as below:

Hi, my name is Frederick Curbelo. I'm with California for Internet freedom, and I'm calling to request a meeting with Senator Boxer during the January recess.  The PROTECT IP vote is happening on January 24th, and I wanted the Senator to understand my concerns before the vote happens. On behalf of California for Internet Freedom, I am requesting a meeting at a time suiting the Senator's convenience on or prior to January 23rd 2012.
We can set up a phone conference or I can provide web/video/Skype conference capabilities as well due to the current open nature of the Information Technology and Internet industry.

It's good to be an American, let's keep it that way.

    Sincerely,

    Frederick Curbelo

    CA 95648
  • Attention,  anyone in the los angeles area that gets a meeting.  Please post when and where to be.  I would like to be part of it.
  • Requested a meeting in San Francisco prior to the vote.
  • I'd be happy to join anyone/everyone here for a meeting with the Senators who are both in San Francisco area. Should each of us request a meeting with them since they obviously would meet us as a group.
  • Requested meetings with both. Tweeted to Sen Reid and Schumer as well as Mayor Bloomberg asking him to talk to Schumer.
  • I'll join any meeting arranged in the SF Bay Area.
  • @Camburn045 - there is strength in numbers, but we need you to take action!

@NotPhilCollins @erikespe1968 @davidnotdave - Thanks for requesting meetings guys! If you don't receive a response soon, feel free to drop by your local office unannounced and have a chat with a staffer.
  • Requested a Los Angeles area meeting with Sen. Boxer and/or her staff via webform.
  • I want to know why these Senators don't do their JOB and pass a budget which they've been delaying for almost 3 years now instead of messing with the Internet.

Here's an Android App that will allow you to scan UPCs and see which companies are supporting SOPA so that you can boycott their products.

I will keep watching this thread and will be happy to join anyone who schedules a meeting in Los Angeles!
  • sent request...received reply from Sen. Feinstein...
  • Done, done and done.  Asked for a meeting on the 16th but flexible on date as well as time.
  • edited January 2012
I sent a very polite request by email to both honorable senators. Did get the usual answer from Feinstein: "This email is to confirm that your scheduling request has been successfully received....."
    Nothing from Boxer so far.

  • Also wondering if, being an entertainment company, a letter such as the following will help (This is a modified letter, as sent by Google and others):

    Re.: SOPA

In line with many content owners, we support the bills’ stated goals—providing additional enforcement tools to combat all websites that are dedicated to copyright infringement of which we have also been a victim for some time. Unfortunately, the bills as drafted would expose law-abiding Internet and technology companies to new and uncertain liabilities, private rights of action, and technology mandates that would require monitoring of websites. We are concerned that these measures pose a serious risk to our industry’s continued track record of innovation and creativity, as well as to this nation’s cybersecurity. We cannot support this bill as written and ask that the legislature consider more targeted ways to combat “rogue” websites dedicated to copyright infringement and trademark counterfeiting, while preserving the innovation and dynamism that has made the Internet such an important driver of economic growth and job creation.

One issue merits special attention: We are very concerned that the bills as written would seriously undermine the (DMCA) safe harbor provision for Internet companies that act in good faith to remove infringing content from their sites. Since their enactment in 1998, the DMCA’s safe harbor provisions for online service providers have been a cornerstone of the U.S. Internet, content providers and technology industry’s growth and jeopardize a foundational structure that has worked for content owners and lawful Internet companies alike.

What do you guys think ?

  • I just sent in the electronic form, and also downloaded and fax'd the pdf form.  I asked to be contacted/invited to any Los Angeles area meeting regarding the bill prior to the vote.

Will get back with any response, and link to Facebook

Sent in a meeting request for Sacramento. Awaiting response. Will update as information comes.

    "Hi,
my name is X, I'm with California for Internet freedom, and I'm sending
this message to request a meeting with Senator Feinstein during the
January recess.  The PROTECT IP vote is happening on January 24th, and I
wanted the Senator to understand my concerns before the vote happens.

    As
you may well know, many Americans, including myself, are vehemently
opposed to these internet censorship bills. They remove freedom from the
hands of the American people, and without regards for civil liberty,
    pass it onto the corporations.

Thank you for your time, and I hope to have the opportunity to state my case."
  • I sent email letters requesting a meeting with Senators Boxer and Feinstein. I'm in San Diego County.
  • If they do pass SOPA people need to unify and vote in younger people who have and idea of the importance of these issues.  Our current leaders are dinosaurs taking lead from the entertainment lobbyists.  Our only retaliation is to vote these people out of office and remove them from power.  Until we do they will continue to take their orders from the lobbyists who fund their re-election campaigns.  They have power over the internet and our lives until we choose to remove them from power.

And if you think SOPA and PIPA are bad this is just the beginning.  They already passed a federal law requiring IP tracking by all ISP's in the U.S earlier this year.  We let them pass that.  Now they watch everywhere were you go online and keep your activities recorded.  Now the next step.  Tell us what we can view online and funnel our personal financial resources back to the entertainment industry so the lobbyist can hand it back to the politicians at re-election time.

Speak out and vote them out!

  • I'm in the SF BaY area.

I wrote into both Feinstein and Boxer. LEt's see what happens!!
  • I'm in LA and will attend a meeting.
